Hello all, I need some help. My 2005 4.0ltr v6 taco lost all oil pressure. I think I shut it down in time. My understanding is the oil pump in this thing is bullet proof. What else could it be? I checked the oil filter and it was almost dry and no damage I could see. Anyone had this happen? Maybe strainer is clogged? I need advice....Thanks in advance.

Not being a smart-alec but did you check to see if you have oil in it? Take the filler cap off and shine a really bright light in there. What does it look like? Can you smell anything? Is it burning oil? Any blue smoke out the exhaust?
Pull the plugs and inspect for fouling. Check the radiator fluid for oil.
Just a few things that come to mind but it is hard to help not being there to see, smell, and investigate. If it is a clogged strainer you will have to pull the pan to clean it out but do everything else first.
Good luck

Check your oil level first. Had any service done lately where someone may have messed up ?. Also as I recall, your oil filter sits upright so it will drain when the engine is off, so seeing it almost dry isn't necessarily a sign of trouble. Your pressure gauge runs off a sender unit. Check the wiring to the sender first ( the wire or plug may have simply come loose). Once you have found the wire check the connection, if all looks good disconnect the wire from the sender. If it is a single wire, ground it and turn on the key, the oil gauge should swing high, if not, the gauge may have issues or there is a break somewhere in the wire. If it is a two wire sensor, short the two wires together ( use a piece of wire in the plug ) and do the key on test above. To confirm that the sender unit is not bad, hookup a mechanical gauge in it's place. Firing the engine for a few seconds won't hurt and should be long enough to see a reading if there is oil pressure.
no not a smart alec at all, yes i checked the oil, no coolant in oil, no oil in the coolant. everything smells and looks right, its got 55k on the engine and 2100 miles on this oil change. No one I have talked to has ever had this happen. It seem like something else would fail before the oil pump?
I heard upper valvetrain noise when this happened, got it towed home put new oil filter on started for about 5 sec. removed oil filter clean as a whistle. looked down filler tube, i can see oil residue no burnt smell. thanks
