Default Re: how to check engine codes

The early toyota diagnostic plugs were a proprietory design and allowed the use of a jumper to flash the MIL light. Since industry standardization of the diagnostic ports (for OBDII compliance etc.) , code readers are required to acces a data stream and access both industry standardized codes as well as some manufacturer specific codes ( the latter is more prevalent in later years as diagnostics increase in subsystems).

Grab yourself a low cost code reader from the local parts store, I have seen basic ones for under $30.00 ( that will give you a code to look up ) . More expensive ones will list the code and description and also allow watching live data.
