Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "What octane gas do you pump?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have had the best luck with 93 since my truck was new. the truck is consistantly stronger, and gets better gas mileage towing the trailer with 93. If I switch to 89 there is not a big change, just some pinging around 3,000 rpm. If I switch to 87 it stops pinging, but I lose power close to redline. It has been this way since new, my neighbors is the same. If I watch the spark advance through my OBD-II scanner, at part throttle acceleration around 2,800 - 3,400 rpm I am frequently a full 6 or 8 degrees sometimes 10 or 12 degrees less advanced with the lower octane gas even while it is pinging pulling the trailer.
I have found that if I am going slow on the highway without a trailer 89 works ok, but if I am pulling something at speed it is less expensive to run 93

I'm running Shell's 89 octane currently. I'm going back to 87 because I haven't noticed a difference in power or mpg between the two types. 93 is too much (price and additives) for my truck to handle.

I use 87 most of the time and about every 4th or 5th gas stop I'll put in some 89 or 93 (depending on how much money I have in my pocket.) Usually does fine on 87 even pulling a camper.

I run 93 Chevron unoxygenated gas. I have the S/C and the OD Crank Pulley and @ 9PSI, it does not ping. I also got the Unichip and a custom tune to use the 93. So, I guess I am stuck on the 93.

and we n/a TSer's feel just a little bit better not having to be stuck with paying for 93

Well... I don't feel bad to start with!
It was a choice and I made it. I can afford it and I use it.

I've been using 87 octane, these were the recommendations in the manual when I bought my '01 Tundra new. To date, no ping, problems. I also have been using Shell MasterCard for many years, taking advantage of the savings they offer on their card for each gallon purchased.
