Just because you are in a region that does not require oxygenated gasoline does not mean that the fuel you buy is is not oxygenated. Lots of refiners use MTBE (unless you are in a MTBE-banned region) for octane even in regions that don't require oxygenated fuels... especially since MTBE prices have plummeted relative to other octane components in the last couple of years. Refiners aren't stupid, they use what's cheapest.

I know the RFG is not distributed in the mid/south GA area... only north GA (Atlanta area) and the gas I use most likely has MTBE as the octane control componet. I also know I live in an area that does NOT have emissions checks.
All said and done, chances are it is not oxygenated but does containe MTBE.

If your fuel contains MTBE, it's been oxygenated. MTBE is an acronym for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether and all ethers have at least one oxygen atom linking the hydrocarbon parts...that's what makes them an ether. Here in Colorado, gasoline in the Front Range counties has long been required to be oxygenated during the winter months...until the past couple of years the refiners could (and did) use MTBE to meet that oxygenation requirement.

Quoting from this discussion of the chemical structure and characteristics of MTBE "Chemically, MTBE is an ether based molecule containing 18% by weight oxygen "

In case you're wondering, yeah, I have a MS in Organic Chemistry.

OXYGENATED FUEL STINKS!!!!!!!It may burn cleaner but you use more of it, and has a tendancy to ping more, when really hot outside.(over 110)

I use 91 most of the time but sometimes I use 100 when i feel generous to myself.

I'm running Chevron with Techron mid grade 89 octane. My truck was custom tuned to 89 and it runs real strong. Worth the extra $2.00 per fill up.

I run 87 octane gas in my 2003 Tundra. I buy it from either the Esso station in town or at Canadian Tire in the next town over up from me (nice to always get those Canadian Tire dollars when I fill up so I can buy merchandise without paying so much for it!)

Sanosuke!

Nice dissertation. Your treatment on the subject is concise, yet thorough. However, my organic compound of choice is ETOH. But I never add it to my vehicle's fuel.

I have to run at least 89 as I had Jet remap my ECU. I could run 87, but the minute the ECU detected spark knock it would retard the timing.
