Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Hesitation/stumble", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
IVE GOT A 2002 ACCESS CAB, V8., HAD IT FOR A YEAR NOW. ITS ALWAYS HAD A SLIGHTLY ROUGH IDLE. NOT SERIOUS BUT YOU DO NOTICE IT. ALSO, WHEN YOU GET ON IT AND STOMP THE PEDAL, IT WILL HESITATE/HICKUP/STUMBLE RIGHT BETWEEN THE SHIFT. HAYNES SAYS POSSIBLE FUEL INJS/FUEL FILTER/INGNITION NOT OPERATING PROPERLY (VERY SPECIFIC) AND FUEL INJECTION FAULT (AGAIN VERY SPECIFIC).
ANY SUGGESTIONS OR SIMILAR EXPERIENCES?

I'd clean/check your throttle body first. You might also try a bottle of injector cleaner and see if that helps, but definitely check the throttle body and give it a good cleaning.

Thanks for giving me something to go on. This weekend looks like a good one for it. As soon as I get a new gasket and some fresh carb cleaner, I'm on it.
ya dont need a new gasket, just clean it really well with the tb cleaner (anybody know if carb cleaner and tb cleaner are the same stuff?). my favorite method is a toothbrush and some paper towels. ive noticed if i take off the air intake at the tb every oil change and squirt some tb cleaner down there, i can wipe the butterfly and the tb clean with a paper towel, no toothbrush required...a lot easier than digging around every 30k, or maybe i just like messing with the truck
avlube.com sells this stuff called primrose injector perfector...dump a bottle down the hatch and then fill the tank to mix it up real good. it's about 30 bucks for 6, good stuff.
also, it might not be a bad idea to change the pcv valve, it's really, really easy too (under a minute, slightly longer if you clean the foam tubing ). all that goo on the tb comes thru the pcv valve, and the valve costs about 3 bucks or so at the dealership or autozone, so its cheapo preventative maintenance. plugs are a cinch to check on this truck too, worn plugs will cause a rough idle as well.
As a matter of fact I was going to replace the PCV vavle. I had bought one from Autozone a couple of weeks ago. Bought it home and it was SO cheaply made and it let air through! the old was was just fine compared to it. So I left it alone.
I'll check the plugs for crud and gap this weekend too. It'll be the first time I've taken then out for a look in 13,000 miles.
