Default Oil filter O-Ring Busting

Hey guys, I am new to the forums and I have an '08 TRD SR5 5.7 DC. I have lifetime oil changes from the dealer and the last two times I have had it serviced, the oil filter o-ring has busted. I am a service rep who uses my own truck so I go a lot of miles quickly. I had this problem at my 20k and 25k oil changes. The first time it hapened I made it about twenty miles from the dealership and stopped (luckily) at the store and noticed oil all over my truck. The second time it was two days later that it happened and I about had a conniption fit with the service department over why this was happening. I was told by the dealership that this has happened to other customers but few and far between. I have not had any other problems from my truck but I cant sit somewhere for 2+ hours after every oil change to have a tech come save my truck. Any recomendations?

My suggestion would be to tell them to shove their lifetime oil
changes up their arse and do it yourself. You can buy OEM filters
and chances are pretty good you'll be able to use a better
quality motor oil by doing it yourself. To have an o-ring failure
twice! Something's wrong with this picture.

Understand that for the most part the people changing your oil
at the dealer aren't much different than the people changing
your oil at Spiffy Screwed or some chain like that. It's not like
they have their top notch techs changing your oil. I've had
some pretty frustrating things happen on the rare occasions I've
had the dealer change my oil. Nothing like what you've had,
but frustrating nonetheless.

Oil changes should be DIY, specially on trucks which have abundant clearance from the ground (it won't take more than 15minutes for an oil change).
Get to do it once and you will keep doing it you will wonder why one spends an hr at these service stations.

I normally would do these on my own like I have for all my past vehicles but I liked the idea of having the lifetime oil changes availiable because that is one less thing to worry about.......and they will have to pay for any mistakes so it works out. I also had the service manager involved and he is scheduling a service department visit for my next oil change to have the "higher quality techs" look at it.

Techs were probably in a hurry when they worked on your truck. If the filter had enough oil on the o-ring when installed, it wouldn't bunch/pinch up during install and blow out later after getting up to temperature....

If I am not mistaken, this is a cartridge or cannister type filter with a reusable cap and a replaceable element and o-ring. It is likely that they scratched the cap when changing the o-ring or the cap has distorted. Also possible they are not replacing the o-ring to save time. I would suggest you tell them to examine the cap closely during the next oiil change or even ask to see it yourself. Make sure they are changing the o-ring. The cap is usually not expensive and you may just tell them to replace it for peace of mind.
