This is a discussion thread titled "SSAutochrome Headers Installed - Great!!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
It appears that there aren't any headers by SSAutochrome for sale on ebay. I guess I'll have to purchase them from their website. I'll probably get the Y-pipe too, they call the header & Y-pipe package the "Race Setup". It sells for $479 and the headers by themselves are $279. I've read that some of you have paid as little as $150! Man, I wish I could have caught the deals on ebay!!
Question on 03's. Why is it that TRD doesn't make headers for an 03 but the SS Autochrome headers will supposedly fit 00-03? And also JBA makes sepperate headers for the 03...makes no sence.
Kevin
Kevin...
I've been researching this pretty carefully as I'm planning a header installation in April or May on my '03.
Actually the headers from both SS Autochrome and JBA will fit 00-03 (probably also 04) because they're both a direct bolt-in exhaust manifold replacement and the manifolds haven't changed. If you scroll to the bottom of the JBA Header fitment chart, you'll see that PartNumber 2010S (and it's ceramic coated variants) fits the '00 through '03 Tundra V8.
Where the changes happen between the '00-'02 and '03 models is behind the manifold...(1) the cats were moved much closer to the manifold flange and (2) the rear 02 sensor was put in the Y-pipe (at least on the Passenger side, maybe both sides).
Because the TRD headers are longer than the exhaust manifold, they're not a bolt-in replacement. On the '00-'02, installation required cutting the pipe on each side just before the cats and welding in a shorter pre-cat pipe that had a flange that the TRD headers mated with (this shorter flange pipe is part of the kit). But with the cats being closer to the manifold on the '03, things get a lot trickier. Since TRD headers have been reported to be mounted on '03s by a few dealers, the presumption is that much more cutting and welding was done to move the cats back a bit. No one (that I've found) has posted the exact details. So why won't TRD produce '03 headers? The theory is that because mounting TRD headers on '03s is a much more complicated deal than on the earlier models...and necessitates affecting placement of the cats (which, in turn, necessitates a full and complete EPA (and CARB for the Cali folk) emissions test cycle...very expensive to do)...that TRD has decided to just not do headers for the '03s.
As for the confusion that there's a different JBA header for the '03s...that's because there's a different Y-pipe because the '03 has an 02 sensor in the Y pipe and the '00-'02 didn't. JBA's data sheet for the header says the Y-pipe is only '00-'02 but someone did post that an '03 JBA Y-pipe is available (but not in stainless).
The bottom line is that the '03s use the same Autochrome and JBA headers as the '00-'02s...and installation is basically unchanged. If you want a replacement JBA Y-pipe, there is a different partnumber for the '03. TRD doesn't...and probably won't...make an '03 specific header, but the '00-'02 header can be made to work with a lot of cutting and welding of the cat pipes and probably loss of emissions warranty.
As for me...I'm going to install the JBA header (not the Y-pipe).

Excellent post RMRay!. Now it makes sence. I knew the Y pipe was different as it also has a 02 sensor in it, cause I had that removed and they put the o2 sensor mount into my new dual pipes, followed with an H crossover, and bolt up to the stock manafold outlet. So if the SS and JBA headers end in the same place, then either will work for me.
point of fact - no one has proven replacing the y-pipe has increased power on a dyno - in fact some members have said they lost power / tq. due to loss of restriction - stock y-pipe as most know is pinched going into the single exhaust pipe. i belive the stock y-pipe was designed the way it is for a reason, think about it when you look at it , they could have designed it to be like these after market pipes ( full size pipe y merged ) they didnt..... for a reason, im no expert but thats my take on it. lets just say we need dyno results on this y-pipe issue, at least i do befor i buy into this idea.
I've been watching these and there are headers only that start at $150 and headers with Y-pipe starting at $175.
The headers only are being bid on, the last one I trakesd went to over $200.
The headers and Y-pipe seem to get no bids and end at $175
I wonder why?
I noticed that too, but I purchased the headers and y-pipe anyway. I got them for $175 + 10 S/H. I haven't had them installed yet, though, a couple of guys on the board have encouraged me to take on the task. My local Toyota dealership quoted a price of about $335 and one local mechanic shop quoted almost $900!!!! What a rip-off! I'll probably go with Toyota when I can get a break from work!

Well, that is a no brainer! I trust you won't be going back to "your local mechanic shop"! Sounds like Japanese Auto to me!

I agree. I would bet on the stock "y" being just as good, or better on the dyno until someone proves it isn't. A stock early Tundra with the original manifolds and y pipe will hit pretty hard when you punch it from a roll.

Lots of great posts here. I found the SSAUTOCHROMES on ebay for buy now price of $279. This includes all hardware, gaskets, and y pipe. Listed as all Stainless Steel. Most of the current posts have prices closer to $175. Anyone know the difference? I hope to bid a set in the next couple of days.
Is it worth the effort? Only saw one Dyno result posted. SS claims 28 hp gain.
After lots of reading of posts concerning exhausts and intakes, I installed the SS Autochrome headers, the modified air intake, and a Dynamax muffler. Finally got tired of the drone and had a Midas single in/dual out stock muffler ionstalled. No drone now. I only did the modifications to improve the mileage. Once I disciplined myself to keep my foot out of it, I realize a constant 17 mpg around town and 22 mpg on the highway. I have over 67,000 miles on the truck now and have had zero problems. But the headers really made a difference in the performance. But when the tach climbs, the gas gauge is heading the other way.
I paid $125 or the headers on ebay 3 years ago. Then I had to pay another $90 to have the headers trued. Oneheader drifted of over 1/4 inch. Not a problem with the install.
Good question anyone had these on for a few years have any complaints? or issues? Thinkin that $175 looks better than $450 if they are the same thing and that seems to be the consensus through all the previous posts!
