This is a discussion thread titled "SSAutochrome Headers Installed - Great!!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
No offense taken at all! I asked SS Autochrome for the unpublished dyno reports and all they gave me were some rough numbers - no graphics across the RPM range. I assume the dyno would show these headers to be pretty close to the JBA's or Gibson, but once again, just my opinion. RIght now I'm enjoyin' them but that's not to say I won't change 'em either ;>)
Someone could put their truck on a dynamometer for as little as $65 if they go to a group run. It doesn’t have to be a Tundra run.
I’ve noticed most of my gains were from around 2000 to 3500 RPM with my JBA headers. Of course this is the RPM that I drive in most of the time. There isn’t a sharp increase in power at 2800 RPM like there was with the stock manifolds.

I'm having a hard time convincing my wife-to-be that headers are a good deal. Do the headers help mpg? I already tried to tell her that it made the truck safer but she didn't go for that. I'm running out of ideas here.... Thanks
AKTNDR,
Safety, Good one!!!
How about...
-Its just Good fun!!!
-You can haul more groceries....
-You need the power to pull that new Boat, Quads, travel trailer, etc...
Or, if you are really in trouble,
- Its only 250$, you spent more than that shopping last weekend!!
Seriously thougth, my mpg has gone down since the headers. BUT... I just started my 2nd tank since the install & o2 sensor fix (forgot to plug it in...) so the ECU is just getting adjusting (and so am I...) Like V8toilet, my gains were in the 2000~ - 3500~ range and I love the way it feels so I know my right foot has been much heavier than it used to be. I am trying to lighten up on it for this tank so I can get some decent results. I will post when I do...
FWIW...
I will say that of all bolt on performance mods I have ever done on any car, this one has had the BEST seat of the pants feel for a under 250$ mod! In some cases I have spent far more to achieve similar results or less... Just for reference this includes a myriad of Toyotas, Chevys, & fords. Mods like Cams, intakes, carbs, ignitions, lifters, heads, headers, and cat back exhausts...

OK dude, so either you're not married or your wife has never met my wife or AKTNDR's wife!
Seee-ya,
Jim.

Just to let everyone know that I ran the second tank of gas through the Tundra after installing the Autochrome headers and I'm getting about 325 miles to a tank of gas in bumper to bumper Atlanta traffic. Never did any better than 260 before. So about a 3 mpg increase. This is just a couple of tanks and my observations - your mileage may vary.
Had the Autochrome Y pipe installed (welded) at the local muffler shop. A couple of observations:
Most important is that these are not a bolt in installation.
1) The Y pipe when installed tilts down at the resonator end about 3 or 4 degrees.
2) Do not let the local guys install it, force it into position and weld it. Something will break (a weld or worse).
3) Instead, I had the muffler guy straighten the flange on the resonator pipe at an angle so the Y pipe slides over the resonator pipe at the resonator. After it is welded, there is no significant pressure on any of the other connect points.
4) Although the Y pipe angles a bit it is still a fairly straight shot into the resonator.
5) Performance is noticeable at low end where the short tube headers had a hole in acceleration. Acceleraion is smoother through the shifts. No addiltional noise out of the Borla.
I'll report back when it has a week or so of computer adjustment.
Thanks for the update on the install. Did you take any pics of the new y/p ? I'd like to see the differences in the SS Auto/Stk y/p & the JBA.
I don't think my guy had to force the JBA y/p into place. It just moved in-line w/the 3rd cat after he bolted it to the engine-side flanges. Your idea sounds like a good remedy for the install. JB
Got my SS Autochromes on Friday night, ~ 7 hour job total with a buddy helping. Used stock studs/14mm nuts and new gaskets provided. Used air impact wrench to remove collector nuts(had to go find a heavy duty 1/2" impact wrench, mine would not do it - amazed at difference in power between two physically identical looking 1/2" air impact wrenchs)
I removed tires/flaps and jacked up the motor. The driver side header gave us a little trouble(bottom two middle nuts on manifold) so we just pulled the whole motor mount(took a minute or two with a 3/8" impact wrench down there). Other than that the nuts came on and off OK.
The passenger side 02 sensor is put in a less than ideal spot, as it does HIT the tranny side on my truck when tightened. So we took it back off, filed down the mount area some and re-installed, still very close to tranny and a concern on mine.
No leaks after starting up and no check engine lights. Pulled negative battery terminal before starting job so engine is still learning the setup. Can already feel mid range improvement, especially WFO 2nd to 3rd shift, which no longer bogs when hitting third(i run LT285/75 on stock 16" alloys). I have the bassani dual rear exit setup and cut a side out of my airbox(bottom of box facing passenger fender).
My stock manifolds were starting to tick when I drove it, let it sit 15 minutes and re-started, so knew a weld had let go somewhere in one of those stock manifolds. For $175 shipped these headers are a total deal, just make sure to have a lot of 3/8" extensions, 14mm wrenches and sockets and universal joints. Also a good air impact wrench was key for my install.
One thing I wonder about is the gasket longevity, thinking of ordering some extras while these SS guys are still around. Any questions feel free to ask.
They are not CARB certified, but my bassani catback is not CA legal either...I hope to find an ignorant smog check worker, or I will have to bolt stock stuff up to pass test, not fun. Let me know if you're going to buy them and put them on yourself and we can chat.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking. I don't need to get smogged for a year or two, but when I do...I don't think it will be hard to find an ignorant smog tech in this area. I would think it is only the visual inspection that will get you. Maybe there is some way to rig the stock manifold heat shield on there to cover up the headers for the smog check. I don't have a place to do it in my complex. Maybe I can bribe my parents to use their driveway for the weekend. I'll hit ya up if I do get them and install them myself. Some tips would be very helpful.
Exactly what my buddy who helped me install them said - modify heat shields to cover them, lol. My main visual inspection concern would be my lack of third cat, and not the headers, but i'm not a smog tech so we will see. I would be willing to give you a hand installing them, I think it would really help to have someone who has done it before. My e-mail is dclaytor@yahoo-inc.com.
Ive been communicating with SS Autochrome about the O2 sensor issues people have brought up. They said they can place the O2 bung wherever I want it. Does anyone have pictures of the passenger side installed so I can show them the clearance issues regarding the O2 sensor against the tranny. I'm looking to buy a set but want the O2 issue cleared up first.
