Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "SSAutochrome Headers Installed - Great!!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Exactly what my buddy who helped me install them said - modify heat shields to cover them, lol. My main visual inspection concern would be my lack of third cat, and not the headers, but i'm not a smog tech so we will see. I would be willing to give you a hand installing them, I think it would really help to have someone who has done it before. My e-mail is dclaytor@yahoo-inc.com.
Dave
Thanks for the offer Dave!! It will probably be a while due to $$$ and time. I've been buried at work. We're closing a bunch of buildings here in Santa Clara which means lots of work for me. I'm still debating, but I'll definitely hit you up about it. I'll make sure I have "supplies" for the install.
Well I just ebay'd me some SS Autochrome headers as well. I'm tired of the cracked manifold. How long did it take you guys to put them in? Overall it sounds like the nuts are a real PITA to get at. I have quite a bit of knowledge working on cars, but I like to have it all figured out before hand if possible. Thx.... good thread.
P.S. I'll Gtech mine before and after headers to give indication of improvement numbers.

If you use the G-tech try to go to the same exact place in the same temperatures. Allow ~ 500 miles for the computer to adjust to the headers too.

Bomber I noticed that you got the Volant air intake system. Why not go with the SSAutochrome air intake since you have the headers? Do you know if anyone has that intake and what it might be like compared to the Volant?
Im interested in installing headers since I have the exhaust crack as well. However, it sounds like I wouldnt see any benefit from these since they perform best around 3k/rpm. I only hit that RPM range when I need to jump into traffic on the freeway.
Anything out there that will benefit us slowpoke grandma type drivers in the lower rpm's?
I went with the Volant based on design, i.e. thermally insulated plastic to enclose the filter, smoother airflow, etc. I looked at the SS Autochrome FIPK clone and didn't want to have the problems that other folks have had with the MAV and actual reduced performance. Just my opinion, and so far, I like the Volant system very well.
My ssautochromes are being put on as we speak. I should get my truck back tomorrow. No way I was going to do it myself, I drive boats, not very good at turning wrenches in tight spots. Can't wait to get toyota thunder back.
WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

The man has got the TUNDRA BUG!
Hey, don't be disappointed when you first get 'er back. It'll take a good two weeks and perhaps 300-500 miles before the ECU relearns and starts giving you some noted improvements.
Actually, it's kinda cool as each time you start the truck over the next few weeks it gets better, and better, and better....etc.
Seee-ya!
Jim.

Headers installed, going to pick truck up in a few. Mechanic says o2 sensor on right side was so tight, he had to take the header back off to get the sensor on, then install the header. Says they need to rotate that bung at least 20*. Hope it don't break on me.
Later
Ron

I sent SSautochrome pictures of the installed passenger side header showing the O2 sensor clearance problem. Their response was that it is tight but not obstructed. I guess they never tried to remove or put one in once the header has been installed. However, they stated once their current inventory is out, they are planning on correcting the problem by properly positioning the O2 bung. No time line given.
Did anyone have to move the shift cable over so it wouldnt be too close to the left header? Also, Anyone withought wrap or heat blankets on your headers, did you wrap your hoses or wires to protect them?
Thanks,
Ron
