Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "SSAutochrome Headers Installed - Great!!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
1. Anything is better than the logs that were on it.
2. I am no mechanic but, I have however shopped for headers before for a roadrunner I owned once upon a time and, when comparing headers side by side, can you tell the difference? Between the metals? The welds? I honestly couldn't.
3. Yah, the O2 sensor could probably could be in a better position but it still fit in.
4. Have you held these headers? They are solid. The flanges are thicker than the ones I bought for my roadrunner, thats for sure.
5. Yup, I paid $163 for the headers. Yup, I paid $65 for the Y-pipe. Yup, I'm in the military, I'm an E-5, and I don't get paid half what I should after 14 years. So I bought these headers, and you know what? They work, well, and I'm sure they are not as good as the JBA's you spent probebly $600 on, but they don't suck, and they provide flow that I was looking for.
I'm not trying to be argumentive man. But for me, this was a cost efective alternative to JBA's.

SS Autochromes fit fine, little tight on passenger 02 sensor - to me the only difference from JBA's is the CARB certification - potential deal breaker for many, i'll take the risk.
Just drove highway 88 from Jackson through Carson Pass, can feel difference in the hills for sure. BTW - I have Bassani with rear exit and cut a side out of my airbox. If you're not living in CA, I could see spending three times the price. My .02.
No serious beefs here....I just don't think they should be able to make any claims of performance...specifically how there's is better than JBA's ,if they can't even muster up the lousey 100.00 and get one DYNO'd .
The JBA headers and the SS autochrome headers are different. The JBA header uses 1-1/2” primaries and the SSautuchrome headers use 1-5/8’ primaries. On a short tube header that means that the JBA headers are more likely to produce better low-end torque. From the few reviews that I have read about them the SSautochrome headers seem to chime in above 3000 RPM. The JBA headers increase low-end torque (under 3000 RPM) by about 20-ft. lbs. of torque. Advertising greater peak numbers doesn’t tell the whole story!
The JBA headers use what they call a fire come collector, which is not new to header design. It has a cone welded into the center of the collector to help reduce turbulence inside the collector. The SSautochrome header only have a flat plate welded in and this causes turbulence as the gases exit each primary.
The JBA welds are good except that they are not ground down smooth inside the collector and if left untouched the welds could impead exhaust gas travel. I ground mine down for a smoother transition. I don’t know how good the SSautochrome header welds are but if they’re anything like the Y-pipe I have than I would say they are better. The quality of the Y-pipe is top rate for just $60!

is it a good idea to replace the O2 sensors with new ones before install or is there enough room for replacement after they are installed??? and are the heat shields needed ? thanks

Nope, the heat shields are no longer needed/won't fit on the new headers.
Depending on the mileage on you truck, you can either opt to replace the O2 sensors for "cheap insurance" (check out http://www.sparkplugs.com) or simply take the old ones off your stock exhaust manifolds and use them on the new headers. However, w/ the SS Autochrome headers it may be kinda tight, especially on the passenger side if you get the "older version" with the ill-placed O2-bung.
I used my old O2 sensors for my JBA's, but ended up having to replace the driver's side O2 sensor anyway due to complications.
See my sig for "JBA Installation Tips" for addt'l details...
Seee-ya!
Jim.

The JBA headers and the SS autochrome headers are different.
The SS autochome headers also have thicker flanges. They are 1/2" compared to 3/8" on the JBA's. Also they are 304 Stainless and are welded on the outside of the flanges. They are nicer looking too! (at least in the pictures)

You gentlemen that have bought the S&S Y-pipe, is it stainless or is it chrome? The picture on the Internet looks chrome and in the description it states "chrome y-pipe". V8 said he thinks it is chrome, not stainless. If so, do they offer it in stainless or is it chrome only?
Thanks..

Yes, I did that and they say it is "Chrome plated steel". This is the one currently offered on ebay as part of the header/y-pipe combo. I don't know if that means all of them they sell are like this or not. It would be nice if they had a phone number. I couldn't find anything but a fax number on their web site.
Thanks...

Has anyone bought their version of K&N's FIPK? What do you think? Im thinking of buying their FIPK and using it with Tremo's RAPS, Im hoping the RAPS will recover the loss of performance in the low rpm, thus providing improved performance in a wider rpm range. Is SS's FIPK the same as K&N's?

I'm selling mine if you want one for $50 + shipping. It looks to be a copy of the FIPK. I only used it for four days. I like the quiet of the stock intake!
