Fred I just have to say that the installation instructions and layout you give for the Amsoil dual by-pass filter system is top notch. I have included the link to it below. It is very well layed out and explained, the pictures are very good as well. This system also looks like it is very well made and comes with everything you need to do the install. Again a very good writeup with pictures.

BTW I think I want to order one of those SDF-15 filters. At $10.30 its cheap. I paid that much for my current Mobil 1 that is stock size.

The SDF-15 comes in one size. It is true that it was originally one size and was slightly redesigned, but for all intents and purposes it is the same filter. Just new and improved, but it wasn't 'that' recent...
If you want the exact current dimensions of the SDF-15, I list them on this page of my website, and show a picture of an SDF-15 next to the SDF-57 (OEM size):

Just to follow up on your comments re the SDF-15. Given there are different sizes, how do I specify what size of SDF-15 I want? What is the actual size of the one you're referring to for $10.30 and confirm this is the largest unit you recommend for the Tundra? Ciao, Canuck

I use the K&N oil filter, part #HP-3001.
The same filter is listed for Ford and Toyota applications.
If my Tundra bites it, K&N buys the motor.

I finally got wind of this thread, but before I post some known alternatives I want to mention a few things to look out for.
Be VERY cautious about substituting an oil filter. Just because a different oil filter fits does not mean that it is adequate for the application. That said, I'll assume each of you can adequately determine if the filter will physically fit in the space provided, if the threads are the same, and if the gasket surface is a match. Those are the basics.
Anti-drainback valves: Toyota has specified that the filter used on our 3.4L and 4.7L Tundra engines must have an anti-drainback valve. This keeps oil in the filter as well as above the filter and prevents it from draining back to the pan. The benefit is that your oil comes up to pressure much sooner after startup and engine wear is reduced.
Bypass Relief Valves: Some engines are designed with bypass relief valves, and some are not -- these require an oil filter that contains an internal bypass relief valve. Our Toyota engines require a filter with an internal bypass relief valve, but not just any will do. The actual relief setpoint has to be of the range specified. If the setpoint is too low, then oil byasses the filter when it should not and your oil is not adequately filtered. If the setting is too high, then your engine will see reduced oil flow as the filter nears capacity (as it fills with trapped dirt the differential pressure across the filter rises) and this will cause premature engine wear and will shorten engine life.
Warranty coverage: You are protected by the Magnussen-Moss Warranty act, which allows you to use any brand of oil filter. But YOU ARE NOT COVERED IF YOU USE THE WRONG FILTER. If Toyota can prove that the damage was caused by using the wrong filter they would defer coverage to the filter manufacturer -- do you think the filter manufacturer will then cover you?
Finally, I have personally verified several alternative oil filters for the 3.4L and 4.7L engines that AMSOIL makes. Some are not cost-effective, so I will list only a couple worthy alternatives.
SDF-57 ($9.60) - OEM sized, specified for the 3.4 & 4.7
SDF-34 ($9.60) - 'the long version' of the SDF-57
SDF-15 ($10.30) - the largest option, twice the volume of the OEM and increases capacity to 7 quarts
There are shorter versions of the SDF-15, and another that is between the 57 & 34 in length, but listing them is pointless because you either want OEM sized or bigger -- and if you want bigger why go just a little bigger?
Finally, if you use the SDF-57, SDF-34, or SDF-15 on your Tundra you WILL be covered by AMSOIL's warranty in the unlikely event of an engine failure due to the oil filter's failure. Additionally, you will also retain your Toyota warranty because these filters meet the exact specifications set forth by Toyota.

Oil Filters!! I immediately cross referenced my stock filter to a larger Ford filter when I did my first change. I am not near my truck but I believe that the numbers are 515115 or something like that. My oil is always Synthetic and always clear even after 5000 miles. I think that it is an easy upgrade and donot think it is doing any harm. My truck eats more cars and trucks than I could imagine for a snack every day! Hail Toyota (Tundra )!!

I have a interesting observation when oil change 1st time at 3300 miles. The colorationon the dipstick is light brown which is just a little darker than when new. But when I pour oil from the old filter color was all black. I made the comparison with clean white paper towel. Perhaps OEM filter is doing a good job.

I have been using the mobil 1 filter #M1-301 for the last 2 oil changes its big like a normal filter and clears all the belts and hoses.
There should not be any worry about drain back since the filter hangs down (mostly ) and it also has the rubber seal to prevent it from happening.

Yes I agree-and don't use them either (on the Toy-my old Ford gets Fram, but it's just a rolling scrap heap).
Just referencing the part number, because every one else does too.

I'll take the "dinky" Toyota filter over anything Fram produces. If you have ever seen the inside construction of a Fram, you will agree that they are junk.

Fram PH8A or equiv. (old Ford filter) fits...that is, it screws on in place of the little dinky one Toyota uses. Not sure if it clears all belts, hoses, etc.
I have a filter relocator, and use the K&N filter (I believe it is part no. HP-3001, same for old Fords and Toyotas)
When I was installing it I found the Toyota filter fit the adapter, and the Ford filter fit the engine.

I am currently using an AC Delco PF-2 on my v8 Tundra. I've had no problems, but Fred warned me about using a non-OEM filter. There could be problems with relief valve settings and anti drainback. I e-mailed AC Delco and asked them if it was ok to use the PF-2 instead of their recommened PF-53. I thought with the full size filter I would get 1/2 a quart more oil(less breakdown, cooler oil), an increase in filtering area, and maybe the bigger filter would start filtering quicker. Well, Delco took the easy way and said stick to the recommended filter. They said that if you change your oil and filter regularly, then the benifits of a larger filter do not outway the risks.

Can anyone comment if they have looked at a larger size oil filter? Some time back (Before the old system was hacked) it seemed there was a thread from one of the TS folks which mentioned an AC PF-2 filter may adapt to the Tundra V8. I didn't print out the thread though.
In looking at the OE oil filter, it seems that its small size could be improved upon by a larger filter with more filter media.
Appreciate any comments and thanks in advance.
