Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Volant FIPK Cold Air Intakes & Stuff", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've read quite a few posts from users and haters of cold air intakes, their advertised performance increases versus what they really supply. My question is this, is anyone using any of these intakes with headers and dual exhaust? Is the performance better now that the IForce is breatthing in and out a little better? I'm specifically interested the Volant but would also like to hear from the new and improved FIPK owners.
I'm really not sure why more people are not trying the Volant system. From the looks of it, it would appear to be one of the better designs I've seen (from looking at pics only). It keeps a sealed box (less heat from engine), uses the stock fender channel for intake, and I believe it's a "drilless" system...true bolt on retaining stock sensor.
If there were any positive posts on this I'd give it a run...just not sure I want to be the first!??

Mostly just higher rates of flow / improved power and mileage....at least supposedly??
It's the only available aftermarket intake that I've seen that tries to straighten out the air flow a little bit, tries to keep engine heat from the airflow and doesn't look like something just ginned together. I would really like to hear from someone using one though.
bomber i put my volant intake on after i installed the flowmaster exhaust. honestly i didn't notice too much of a gain in performance. after 3,000 r.p.m's it pulls pretty good though. i am an agresive driver and i get on average 15.2 mpg now i use to get 14.6 on average. the volant is a bolt on kit no drilling. the box has a carbon fiber looking plate on it which you can take on or off. i don't know how the k&n ones are but after 3,000 r.p.m's the intake almost drowns out the exhaust its loud but i like it. hope that anwsers your questions.

Thanks Cobra22r! I have the exhaust gases working a little better with headers, y pipe and Borla catback. Looking to try and improve the flow of air in without upsetting the MAV.
From what I have gathered from all the posts, the Volant seems to try and improve flow of air by smoothing out the 90 degree input from the stock box at the intake. It's also made of material that is thermally insulating so the it doesn't warm the input air per say. It certainly isn't going to give you a 30 or 40 degree delta from engine compartment heat that everyone is looking for (that reminds me of a mod to circulate cold air conditioned air to the intake - another post) to condense the air. It also appears that it uses a higher efficiency 360 degree filter instead of having to go through another contortion through the filter of the stock box. It may be pure nonsense but I'd like to hear if it is a real improvement.
Say, has anyone looked into water injection? Pretty big in the 60's and 70's to cool down and condense mixtures for the big blocks?
I put the Volant in my 03 and it just wasn't working. The air flow sensor didn't fit the way it did on the stock ducting and I couldn't get the air filter on once I got the box mounted. Also, there was an extra vacuum line on the ducting w/ no where to go on my truck. I called up Volant and let them know my situation. They said to they needed to modify the unit to make it compatible w/ the 03's. I took it back to Eliminators in Lakeside and they refunded my $ and about a week later Volant sent me an intake mod that works beautifully.........for freee. OOOOOOPPPPS I probably shouldn't have said that. FOR BEST RESULTS UNSCREW THE (SIMULATED) CARBON FIBER LID ON THE BOX AND YOU'LL REALLY HEAR SOME AIR SUCKING NOISE.
