Default ecu swap

you cannot swap the ecu from a 2002 tundra to a 2003
The processors in the ecu are totally different, the truck wont run or do anything.

Default it would cost you more

NO the turbo system actually creates more power because it uses waste gases to power the compressor side of the turbo, the supercharger actually takes power from the crank to creat power.
and the trd blower+ unichip cost would be higher than 4500.00

turbos are more efficient than supercharger because there is no parasitic loss and the system is intercooled so more power can be achieved by adding boost. trd runs 7 psi and only creates 275 hp max at the wheels while the turbo kit produces 375 at the wheels on only 5psi, just imagine if you go to 10

Default fast aint cheap

going fast cost $$ the more you got the more you go. tundras are no exception +More. the ecu swap from 2002-2003 wont work 100 percent but it will work. all sensors are the same except fot the tps.

Ya know one more downside to turbo, if you've bought headers they're scrap now!

Ok I think I will stick to the TRD S/C and headers and tweak it with the Apexi S-AFC.
Toyolover what do you think of the Apexi Super-Air Fuel Controller
do you think this is a good controller to adjust the fuel on a N/A or S/C

i am goin to have a local speed shop install a turbo and unichip in my tundra in a few years. i am goin to wait until i have another vehicle to use, even though it will be mainly dedicated to 4 wheeling, but i can still drive on the street while the tundra undergoes its transformation. i would bet that the turbo and unichip upgrade would run me about 4K or 4.5K so it is still reasonable

Cool

rsvees:
Stock Open rear won't hold long for Nitros, Turbo(s) or S/C. Nor will the xmission.

My project, as $$s become available, over the next year is to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade:
1. Just got new Limited Slip, plan to install in next couple of weeks
2. Upgrade xmission, valve body and torque converter. http://www.levelten.com/
3. S/C
4. Unichip as soon as it is C.A.R.B approved. http://www.dastek.co.za/
5. Rebuild engine

Default You know....

I can't believe all the info from this thread. Now answer me this. Where can I get aftermarket free flowing heads. Either this or, has anyone had their heads ported/polished?

Ron

I think Tundraplumber got his heads ported by that guy in Texas. He lives in New England!

What's the point of swapping heads? If you want more flow, then have them ported. We've got 4-valve heads that probably flow quite nicely looking at our power curve. Toyota makes nice heads... look at the Supra's... most don't touch their heads and they make plenty of power (cams are a slightly different topic).

The tundra probably isn't the best platform for going fast. The tranny probably won't handle all that much power and a single turbo is not going to be legal in states that have visual inspections (i.e. CA).

I really like this truck but unless you're willing to sink huge amounts of money into it, it just won't be that impressive. That guy has a TRD SC and a Unichip (about 3700 + 1000 + install and tuning costs) and he's just barely in the 13's at 95 mph? Plus he's gotta worry about his tranny (even though the stock LSD will probably hold up, although I'm not too sure how many good launches it'll take). Compare this to the competition and it's a bit silly. Then take into consideration how this truck handles and brakes and how much you'll have to spend to make it safe with that power and the costs keep going up.

As far as internal engine components, most manufacturers will make a set of custom pistons up for the 4.7 (JE usually does) which will probably cost around a grand. Naturally aspirated I don't think this motor will break over 350 flywheel horsepower and work with pump gas. That's with heads/cam/higher compression pistons/engine tuning which will probably cost in the 4-6 thousand dollar range.

Default right again!

I looked into the port and polish today, that is the route I am prob going to go. I don't see the point in the S/C, I'm just not willing to drop the coin. I'm not looking for huge gains, just something a little more. Exhaust/intake is not going to do it by itself, of course it doesnt hurt. Now a camshaft, finding an aftermarket provider of import V8 camshafts has proven to be dificult, and I will probebly have to salvage one out of a wrecked tundra, and have it re ground.

The other question I have is, will 2001 tundra heads work on a 2000. I ask this because I found some heads to use, but they are 2001 heads.

This whole project came about because I wanted a Camaro, but due to space constraints, have to settle for tricking out the truck. I think I'm having more fun with the truck than I would have with the Camaro.

Like I said before, follow at your own risk.

Quote:
Also, the reports that I have given on the feel and performance of the truck with the mods are what I perceive, and have no technical basis/proof until the truck can be dynoed, or run on a timed track.

Lemme tell you guys something..... The Tundra motor has alot of potential. The LS430 has around 300 N/A horsepower. From what I'm told with a few $$$$ You can make a 600Hp N/A Tundra with a modified stock block, a lexus crank and heads and alil thing called the unichip. I understand that reprograming the ECU is not a good choice, it can be done yes, but think about it, the engineers for Toyota are from Japan, we don't speak their language! Anyhow I really think the best things out there are exhaust mods for small gains, Turbos for large gains, and if you have way to much money a stroker motor with twin turbos outta do ya well! BTW guy who ports and polishes the head has the web site shown deeper in this tread, with the twin turbos.
