The SC for the V8 Tundra is a much more cost effective way to add power and still have a daily driver.
I never argued the turbo is more cost effective, just that it can be done and be just as good as the SC. I thinks it's great that you are getting a SC, just don't spew incorrect facts about things you simply have no experience on......
JAG: DeepStealth made a very good point for me--I'd probably prefer an SC for towing/hauling, but for a sports truck, I think a turbo would work rather well...(besides, all I have to carry around are my bands' equipment and my drum set)...and I don't expect TRD to come out with a turbo setup, either; like you know, they're having enough problems with the SC.
Thats kinda backwards ... a turbo would be better for towing and hauling .. or just as good. And for a racing / sports truck a SC is better because of less lag- means quicker ET
Turbos are more reliable.. no belts.. no gears.. just gas and air .. as long as they are taken care of they will last for almost ever ...
GeneralTJI...That's a good point...I was thinking that a supercharger (and apparently small turbos, also) would work well for more lag-free boost/power at low rpms, which people like for towing/hauling, where as a turbo would be better for a racing/sports truck because of its higher boost potential. But I guess either charger would be good with either category now...sounds good to me.
TurboAndrew: WOW...those are some VERY impressive cars you and your friend have...I've been wanting a Supra for the last couple of years, but then THAT movie came out, and now everybody is looking for one, also ...oh well...sweet cars nonetheless.
JAG, I'm sure that the SC kit is going to be the most simple/complete package; I've just heard that turbos are the way to go to get the absolute most power, so I thought: why not look at the possibility?
I think I know why manufacturers don't put turbochargers on their trucks: when you can get 380hp/450lb-ft of torque with just an SCed V8 (or 500hp/500lb-ft with a NA 8.0L V10), why go with a turbo?....unless you're really sick, like me.
(I guess the Syclone/Typhoons did use turbos on 4.3L V6, didn't they?)
Besides, doesn't it get lonely having the fastest production truck out there with no real competition? I figured Lightning owners would be happy to finally have some competition.
its nice to have low RPM instant torque from the SC...
although a turbo will spool faster and start provind power quicker when it has a greater load (over not having a load).. for example.. the empty truck might not reach full boost until 2500 rpms.. but if you slap a heavy trailer and stuff on it.. it will down lower in the rpm range because it now has a huge load pulling against it.. so they work pretty good...
either is great for racing, I am turbo'ing my taco because I like them better than SC's .. and it will be DAMN original
i cant wait till you guys get some SC's for your trucks.. see what they can do
I remember reading a post on here about someone that put turbos on their Tundra. I think that it was like 900+hp? They might have had nitrous on there too though. I'll have to try to find it later.
'we managed to do a stand alone fuel management set up on the iforce with a custom made twin turbo set up and 200 shot of nitrous on a single cab tundra. power is up to 980whp. no test runs on it yet. oh wuz up gang.. i have been real busy to play on the web but i have some time now. ill keep you guys posted of the results' from nitrousfed's thread 'new project almost ready'
I just talked to rgerdes. he spoke with the trd rep 3 hours ago and was told that the rear diff is not an issue and the tranny will definetly hold. the warranty is still good for the 5 year powertrain as long as a Toyota shop installs it.
There is a 100 hp gain and the torque is uped to 457.
The issue was computer and fuel. there is a 9th injector added and a new computer comes with the super charger.
The cost... hold your butts...
$4,599.00
Only TRD dealers will get them and the first shippment is 200 with each dealer getting only 2.
In speaking with rgerdes he advised that he does not see that there will be any price break at first and there is no information todate as when the second shipment will happen.
A thank you to rgerdes for getting this information. rgerdes is a quiet T/S member, he has not posted anything yet.
I know that my turbo kicks in very nicely and alot smoother than I ever imagined.I dont know how a turbo works with a gasser but it kicks butt on a diesel.I just ordered my boost and egt gauges so I can tell you exactly when the turbo kicks in.Sorry to hear about the trd s/c, I just didnt want to wait to see what would happen, good thing cause I wouldnt spend $4600 on it, not without some hard core proof that it wont do any damage, especially after all the rumors.
I was in the same baot as you were.I traded in on an f250 diesel, turbochargered from the factory.I can get a banks power pack system for 3300 dollars and get a gain of 90 hp and 200 ft lbs or torque, without engine compromises, but the tranny is a different story. How do you like the chip?I have heard they do wonders for diesels as well as gassers.Later
