I have a 2001 Tundra V8, 4x4, access cab, with 82,000kms. Since 40,000kms, I have experienced exhaust ticking and various other cold engine start noises. Last week, after many trips to the dealer, they finally diagnosed the problem as a cracked passenger-side manifold. Unfortunately, I'm outside of the 60,000km warrantee period and have to pay for the repairs myself.
I have been searching for information on the manifold problems, but cannot find the number of times this problems has occured...it certain seems like a lot. I am asking for someone to help me set-up a survey on this forum. I would like to poll tundrasolution members for the following information:
Number of times the driver-side manifold was replaced.
Number of times the passenger-side manifold was replaced.
Mileage when repair(s) was made.
Number of trips to the dealer to diagnose the problem.
Did standard 3 year warrantee cover the repair?
If not, what was the total repair cost
My hope is to gather information to present to Toyota that confirms they have a design problem, so that:
1. They redesign the manifolds
2. They issue a TSB to formally advise their service network about diagnosing the problem
3. They compensate people that have had to pay for their own repairs
It would be easier to buy and install aftermarket headers and call this a "bad experience", but I don't feel this is right and Toyota needs to step up to the plate.
As for the whole poll thing, I think you might want to ask one of the moderator's to help you out on it--not quite sure how that works.
I've had the problem fixed but I'm not sure if it's back again or not. My first manifold was done around 10k, they replaced the driver side, after another 2k I took it back in to have the passenger side replaced. Fortunately the services were covered under warranty, the bill for one side was pretty steep.
I recently took it back to the dealer at 17k but they told me that it was the EFI I was hearing and to monitor it--if it gets worse then they asked me to bring it back.
The TSB has been out for quite sometime on the cracked manifolds--I actually got all the information from this site. I definitely understand where your coming from-- I wouldn't want to get stuck with a bill like that---it's the principle--Toyota's known for their reliability.
btw Mark, the way you post a poll is when you initially create a new thread, there's an option box to check if you want to "create a poll", with a box next to it asking how many options you initially want (4 in this case). it takes you to a new page where you enter the questions (right mani, left mani, both, neither), then you hit post and voila, you have a poll .
Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the 'Yes! post a poll' checkbox when I create a new post. Do you have to have a certain number of posts before you can do this?
Count me in the cracked manifold club, happened ~50k. Noticed the ticking from passenger side after running truck to operating temp, turning off truck for 15-30 minutes and starting again, would tick under load in those situations, especially when hot outside. I inspected the stock manifolds to find the crack in them, could not find it - must be a hairline crack in a weld?
Anyways, slapped on set of those SS Autochrome Headers and everything is better now. In fact, the headers reduced the resonance in the cab from the Bassani cat back when under load, very nice header.
Machzed,
Just thought I'd stick my nose in it here, their guidelines say that registered members can not post polls, just the club members.
Perhaps a member with this manifold problem will start one. I have the v6 anyways, and hear they aren't as apt to have this happen, hopefully. We don't have many header options to use as a fix.
I think they may have just had to thin metal on the first two years being made in the USA.
I'm pretty sure that the engines were shipped from Japan with the manifolds already in place. I had the driver's side crack at about 27K and put on headers. Toyota gave me a new set of stock manifolds.

I've had a cracked manifold since around 30,000 miles. I hate that embarrassing ticking noise. Fortunately, it decreases quite a bit once the engine warms up, but it never goes away completely. Even after the engine's warm, if you happen to be in a tunnel or pull up to comething close where you get noise reflecting back to you, I can hear it. I didn't pursue getting Toyota to fix it b/c I always knew I was going to get headers. Actually, I would have done this long ago if S&S hadn't been working on other projects!
