Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Rear Axle Seal Leakage- 2002 Sequoia RWD", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 2002 Sequoia SR5 RWD with 17K miles on the odometer.
Last month I took it in to the dealer for a leak around the right rear axle (where the wheel spins). The dealer replaced the seal and I thought all was fine.
Leakage/seapage continued and I took the truck back in for a 2nd time. The mechanic kept it 2 days - inspected it, cleaned the area real well, and drove about 30-40 miles and re-inspected it.
The mechanic declared it "bone dry" and deduced that the oil we saw was residual from the initial leak. He said he cleaned everything up real well so no residual oil.
Wife just got back from a 350 mile drive and I am seeing leakage again. It's not dripping on the ground - but for certain the the protective plate protecting the rear disk rotor is moist with thick diffferential oil.
I am frustrated with the dealer that performed the "repair" an he is now saying "seapage" is acceptable to Toyota (BS !).
I plan to take the vehicle in to another dealership next week .
Any thought /recommendations on this 3 rd visit to repair same problem?
Would greatly appreciate it if someone could post the TSB specific to this problem - I'd like to be informed when I take the Sequoia in for the 3rd time to another dealer Monday am.

Title:
REAR AXLE SEAL DESIGN CHANGE
Models:
’01 – ’02 Sequoia, ’95 – ’02 Tacoma &
’00 – ’02 Tundra
Technical Service
BULLETIN
August 6, 2003
The rear axle seal lip design has been changed from a flat face type to an angled face
type. A different SST seal driver is required to install the seal properly and prevent
damaging the oil seal during the installation process.
NOTE:
Use of SST part number 09951–00610 (Replacer 64) as listed in the Repair Manual
to install the newly designed rear axle seal can damage the seal assembly causing
it to leak. Repair Manual update on Technical Information System (TIS) is in process.
The nerve of the "service; writer suggesting to me that Toyota considers oil seapage to be normal.
If Toyota considers an oil leak from my differential seals to be normal after only 17K miles - I will buy a GM product next time !!
Hopefully, it will be properly addressed by another dealership on Monday.
Me thinks the issue is the dealership that replaced the seal screwed the job up and is unwilling to "fess" up to Toyota since it is a warranty issue. CYA - know what I mean?
PS:
Don't have a clue why the dealership indicated by my name here appears- I live in Houston and have never ever dealt with them!!
yours leaked at 17k? mine leaked all over the garage floor at 5k!
take it to another dealer and show them the tsb, verify from work order new part # (for sequoia new seal # is 90310–56002, old seal was #90310–56001) installed.
