Default exhaust system resonator

I recently had a custom dual exhaust put on my V8 Tundra. It's not a true dual, it has a Magnaflow muffler with one inlet and two exits. The guy that installed it said he usually removed the OEM resonator so I said ok. My truck has a good sound under idle and wide open throttle. However, there is to much noise at about 55-65 mph under load with the engine turning about 2000 rpm.

I realize with that muffler there will be a large increase in sound, but would having the resonator eliminate some of the noise so that I still get that mean V8 sound but during crusing conditions it be about half as loud.

All of yall, that have put an exhaust (flowmaster/magnaflow) on yours, did you keep the resonator. I don't really care about performance that v8 has power to spare.

Hey smokedog1604,

I have a 3rd cat instead of the resonator you're talking about. I had to keep it for smog testing here in Kali. I believe you'd like the exhaust sound better if you went back w/a resonator. I have a FM 40 2.5" single in/dual 2.0" outs set up like yours and don't mind the freeway cruising sound. It sounds pretty mean when I step on it.
Check out my pics for a couple of shots of my set up.

What size of pipe diameter did you go with on the muffler's in/outs ?

I'm actually switching back to a single in/out Spin Tech muffler soon. I want more of a "sleeper" sounding truck now. I'm also trying for more torque in the low end rpms. JB

Mine has a 2.5" in and 2.25" out. Our 3rd cats or resonators look different. Mine is an 02 Limited 4x4. I don't think it has CA emissions or anything. Yours looks like a cylindrical shape with cones on the ends. Mine is oval with the pipe going in on one side and then it offsets. That is a pretty cool Y pipe.

Like I said I like some of the noise, I'll probably try installing that cat or resonator back on, if that doesnt work I'll be looking for a different muffler.

What year is yours, does it have a different emissions pkg than mine?

I have a '02 Ltd. 2wd w/CA smog emission pkg. My 3rd cat replaces your resonator. The y/p has really helped my mid rpms power. The truck really hauls butt after 2500rpms.

Check out the Spin Tech Sportsman Street XL muffler if you ever want a "quiter" muffler w/more power than our 1 in/2 out models.
