Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Available Performance mods for an 03 Tundra", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
In the future I plan to do some modifying to my 2003 4wd Silver Sky Tundra. I am just wandering if all of these mods are compatible with each other?
*K&N FIPK
*Ram Air Performance System RAPS
*Helix Throttle Body Spacer (will need to cut about 1/2" off of each coolant fan fin for clearance with the FIPK)
*Downey Headers
*2 1/4" Straights (Custom)
*Jet Chip (is this the only chip mod for Tundra's? If so, I will do this last because of having to send it in to have it calibrated to work with the other mods)
*One thing that I don't want to do is throw a code and turn on the old Check Engine light. Will any of these mods do that?
Just wandering, anyone's input will be greatly appreciated.

none of these mods should turn on the check engine light, except the fipk if it falls off (hey eric! lol), or if you bonk an o2 sensor while installing the headers.
hey stealth, if im not mistaken tremo made the RAPs for use WITH the K&N FIPK, that is the way i understand, i may be mistaken though
micheal, if you do not plan on running a s/c then get a pulley from nistrousfed, a former member here. check out the engine/drivetrain forum for all the info, and i too want a 5.3 killer, and maybe one day i can have a GT and Z28 killer too!
Not to be the Kill joy but the tiny 4.7-liter v8 engine just can't compete NA in power with a modified 5.3-liter Chevy. The modified 2WD 5.3 guys can get there trucks to run 14.9 second quarter mile times, which is on par with a supercharged I-force. The Aftermarket support for the Chevy is just much better. A modified I-force can come close though and even match them in some cases in acceleration. The 4.8 though is a different story!
As for modifications I would wait to see what the SS headers do for power on the dynamometer and if they don’t show much improvement over what’s already available than I would get something like the JBA or SSautochrome headers. The Downey headers are not stainless steel! I would not go with duals either unless you must have the looks. There is no advantage in terms of power over a single exhaust.
The Helix power tower is a scam and the FIPK will cost you low-end torque for some top end horsepower, which is not good for towing and hauling but good for a higher mph at the track. The better low-end torque of the stock intake might get you out of the whole quicker though.

v8,
i am goin to have to agree and disagree with ya on that one. i ALMOST beat a friend of mine in her stepdads 98 chevy with the 5.7. yes, i got beat by a girl, but considering she had a lot less weight with her single cab and a liter more engine, i think i ran a good race. i think that it is also a lot of the driver skill. i may just be 18, but i have learned to drive quite well, and know how to push my truck to the limit, but never quite hit the limit. i think that the 4.7 can be easily made to match a 5.3 given the same amount of money, even though the tundra is way behind in aftermarket support. hopefully someday someone will get the idea and give us some speed parts, and maybe even some suspension goodies. i dont want to start a fight here, just defendin my truck!

Hey Michael,
I can speak from experience on the K&N FIPK w/the RAPS kit. This combo is way better than just the FIPK by itself. I would have argued to buy the K&N a few months ago but now I feel that for the money, you'd be better off going w/the RAPS kit and a drop in filter of your choice along w/either the JBA or the upcoming S&S headers. One mod that you didn't mention is swapping out the stk y-pipe w/an aftermarket y/p like JBA or S&S Autochrome.
Check out the difference stk y/p and JBA y/p Remember to go with either an X or H connector pipe if you want to go with dual pipes. This will eliminate most of the low end loss of going w/straight duals. Check out TS member Verndog's exhaust set up in his pics. It's 50-50 if people like or dislike the throttle body spacers. Hope this helps your decision. JB
Just to make a small correction so that there isn’t a misunderstanding. The 5.3 liter Vortec engines are more powerful and respond better to breathing modifications than the 5.7 liter Vortec engines do. Stock the Vortec 5.7 has 255 horsepower in 98 I believe (correct me if I’m wrong) and the 2001-2003 5.3 liter Vortec engines have 285 horsepower. The 5.7-liter Vortec has more low end torque than the 5.3 liter engine has though.
I disagree somewhat with your opinion on the modification of the two engines. I agree that the 4.7 could be modified to make killer horsepower with say Lexus heads but that would cost thousands of dollars. For $300 headers, a $350 programmer, an intake that actually works, an exhaust, and tricks like descreening the MAF sensor the 5.3 can go from running 16 second quarter mile times to 15.1 second quarter mile times in an extended cab mind you. The Vortec engines are very powerful have have lots of hidden horsepower without having to change the heads. Those combined modifications cost under $1500 for the Chevy. You cannot get things like a HPPIII for the Tundra and most exhaust systems don’t show much improvement on the Tundra. If you spent $4000 for a supercharger, $450 for headers, $400 for an exhaust, you would be running 14.7-15.1 second quarter mile times without tire spin for a combined cost of $4850. I’ve watched a TS member run his supercharged Tundra at the track and most people with the above modifications who go to the track post similar times.
I’ve raced a modified 99 Chevy and the only reason I took him off the line at the track was because he spun his tires worse than I did. He ran a 15.3 second quarter mile time even though he spun. If he could hook up he would have been very close to a 14.9. The best I ran that day was a 15.75 with only a JBA exhaust.
I think though as the I-force V8 matures and Toyota produces more and more of them, aftermarket companies will produce more and more readily available affordable bolt on parts that work. Still come this fall I might actually click off a 15.3 second pass with the modifications I have now. We’ll see what happens! I ran a 15.526 stock once anyway with consistent 15.72 second quarter mile times and tire spin on a 40-degree day. With my modifications on a 73 degree day I clicked off two 15.6 quarter mile times running against a 2WD QC HEMI that ran one 15.5 and one 15.3.

Two more mods are available through Mike (a banned member). He's got a setup for a 90 mm Lightning throttle body for 2003 Tundras that'll give about 30 hp so he says. There's also the underdrive pulley.

Thanks Wes, you are correct. I originally purchased the K&N FIPK and then developed the Ram Air Performance System around it since I wanted to get more cold outside air aimed at the K&N.
Later, I re-designed the system to support the Sequoia, V6 and V8 stock air boxes. Both versions are available via the TS store for $99 bucks under the Intake Systems section:

i dont see anything referring to the lightning throttle body upgrade on his page, got any idea y? that sounds like a good mod, and something that is at a halfway reasonable price
