Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "General lubrication", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
My old Eclipse was the same way. "Sealed Chassis" they call it. Supposedly never needs lubing.
Of course my old '66 Mustang's rear diff was supposed to have "lifetime" fluid in it too...when I "inherited" it (it was the family hand-me-down) I went to change the fluid, and it was about as viscous as gasoline....

Thats weird isnt it----no grease fittings--Everything needs a little grease every once in a while--Buzz
It's called "Preplanned obsolecence." The automotive manufactures started this trend in the 70's.
Yes the new type lubricant the factory uses in the steering, driveline and suspension components is good, but lasting for a lifetime is stretching it a bit.
Hopefully some aftermarket manufacturer will make 'lubeable" Ujoints, tie rod ends and other "Non lubable" items available for replacement parts. But if the manufacture's claims are correct, we should never need to replace these items anyway!
