Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Injection Cleaners and Mobil 1 Oil Filters", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Do any of you use some sort of fuel additive to clean the injectors? I am a little weary of this due to a complete melt down of my cats in a 97 Chevy after adding a Valvoline product. However, I know they need something. But what?
Also, another question. Where do you guys buy the Mobil 1 oil filters? I have tried to locate a dealer via their website, but the ones they list no longer carry the filters. Cant find one, so I used Toyota OEM again.
Originally posted by 2toytrucks Techron from Chevron is one of the best, a little pricey but works great!! Not sure about the filter though ( I only use dino oil ) good luck.

I agree, I give Techron gas additive and injection cleaner a big thumbs up. In fact, I just dumped some in this last fill up.
Redline is good too and has the advantage of being more concentrated so you can add a little to a couple of tanks and get the same or better effect.
Though, I will have to say that running just about any "on sale" cleaner is better than not running anything. I'm sure I've even run valvoline without any issue. They usually make good stuff.
If you want the best stuff, I'd recommend BG products (for everything just about) but I think you can do the same thing with two treatments of techron for the same results. http://www.bgprod.com (but their page was screwed up last time I looked). BG is "professional grade".
I have not tried the Techron or the Redline. I usually use the NOS fuel injector cleaner. I don't use the octane booster. I have not had any problems using the NOS at all.

I use BG 44K that I get at the Toyota dealer (which they put in vehicles routinely at various service intervals). I get my Mobile 1 filter at Autozone.

Most of BG's stuff is associated with the usage by mechanics. They make a lot of the fluid recycling and cleaning equipment mechanics use.
I use Chevron Techron every 3k miles and the Pure One oil filter. Any feedback from the people using the Primrose injector cleaner? It sounded good a while back, but you don't hear much about the stuff.

I also have heard good things about the BG44K. A little expensive. The radio station I listen to has a call in program and the guy says the BG products are the best. Hes been in the car repair business over 25 years so he should know what he talking about. (He also sell BG products , so he got a dog in the hunt.) I think Im going to give it a try next time I need to add injector cleaner---I have also used the Techron and Berrymans "Total" with good results---Buzz
I use Primrose Injector Perfector at every oil change, Mobil 1 @ ~6K, it works great for me with over 122K on my TOY. To me it seems to works better than the others I've used (Chevron, STP, Redline & Valvoline); no experience with the BG. I would rate Redline and Chevron at number 2 & 3 behind Primrose. Primrose gives a measureable fuel savings for about 3-4K. Down to my last bottle.
Tried to set up a group buy last year. Shared my 1st case of Primrose with several members who also posted good results. Problem with the Group buy was Primrose wouldn't split up case lot shipments to multiple addresses; go figure.
Three other important issue to me: 1) change the fuel filter at a regular intervals. 2) Stay away from "Discount" Fuel. 3) May sound silly but I don't fuel at a station if I see the tanker dropping off or pulling out; stirs up sediment in the stations tank.
If someone in Primrose's area bought multiple case lots, believe discount price break was at 5-6 cases, and reshipped I'd be interested. I'm looking at buying another case in Nov.
At what mileage should you run and injector cleaner?
I think my dealer puts the BG 44K in at 30,000 mile intervals. Service tech said it's cheaper than replacing an injector which apparently costs about $200. I put the stuff in along with a full tank of premium unleaded gas and I have 25,000 miles on the truck. I just bought the truck though and didn't have any history on it. This is why I also dumped all the fluids and changed everything to Mobil 1 synthetics.
Be careful if you use the BG 44K. Use a funnel. The stuff is kind of gelatinous. I read in another thread that some guy took the paint off his vehicle where it had dripped.
I started using it after my mechanic used it to clear up the pinging on my old explorer. I bought some and put into my 130,000 (at the time) Corolla. It made such a big difference I told some friends and they tried it. I have gone through a case between myself and friends (group buy at local dealer) and plan to use it every 6 months as maintenance. When I first used it in the Corolla my mileage and power went up. Shortly after my mileage went back down some. I know this is due to the fact that 5500 RPM comes up so easily and frequently again. If I drive easy on a longer trip I get 35+ mpg repeatedly (and numerous 40 mpg) but what fun is that? After researching some and finding that the only places I could get it locally was Toyota, Lexus, Infiniti, BMW and Honda because they use it for their in house services, I felt much better about using it on regular basis. I figured if they use when they do a Fuel Injector cleaning and charge $140+ (granted they also use a couple other cleaners with it) $25 per year to keep my injectors cleaner is well worth it just in better MPG's

You could propably use it annually and get the same results with some cheaper techron treatments in between during your oil changes but I'm definitely not one to argue with overkill when it comes to maintenance.
Your heads will definitely be clean! BG products are especially effective in flushes and as an additive to dino oil.
You know, I have notice that with some injector cleaners (Primrose injector perfector is one of them) that my gase mileage while the cleaner is in the tank does seem to bump up just a bit and goes back down with the next fill. It's obviously not buildup on the next tank, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it atomizes better.
By the way, here's a testimonial to BGs products and how good they are.
