Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Change Tranny Fluid", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
[b]Want to change the tranny fluid in the pan only on 2000 Tundra 4X4. Any advice from someone who has done it. My understanding is that there is no filter to replace only a wire screen to clean. Also believe there is no gasket kit so will need to use liquid form a gasket. Anything else unique to this particular job/truck ? Also how many quarts of tranny fluid are in the pan and need to be replaced for this change? Thanks for any advice!!
its true there is a screen in place of the filter, you can clean that...somewhat. if you can find a dealer or shop that uses the BG system trans service. its a machine that hold 16 quarts of trans fluid, they put quick cleaner in, let run for about 10 minutes, flip the lever and after 10-15 minutes you have bright red trans fluid again. its running NEW fluid through everything, valve body, torque converter, EVERYTHING!!! it works!!! trust me is see this magic every day at my dealership.
Your more than welcome to change only the 4 quarts in the pan, BUT a complete system fluid changeover is 14-15 quarts. It is very simple to do as well.

Is it true that there is no gasket for the pan and you must form your own gasket? Whats best to use here??
How do I access this info you cite. When I click on it it will not allow me to access it. When I look in the Repair and Maintenance Bay Forum I don't see it.

I dont believe there is a gasket. Why would you want to take it off anyway? If all you are wanting to do is drain the 4 quarts that are in the pan, theres a drainplug for that. If you want to drop the pan to inspect the screen (not a filter) then yes I believe others have used PermaTex to form the new gasket. But to be honest I cant remember anyone ever saying that the screen "needed" to be cleaned or replaced once they looked at it.
