Recently, my mechanic said I should be turning the overdrive off while driving in the city. He explained that the transmission will shift in and out of overdrive causing premature wear. How about it? Is this sound advice?

Yes it is good advice for most all vehicles however I believe I read in my Tundra owner's manual that Toyota recommends leaving the trans in overdrive for fuel economy. Maybe someone can verify this?
Most of my driving is in the city and I have left the trans in OD. So far it doesn't seem to be excessively jumping in and out of OD.
I have a Taurus in my fleet at work that will drive you nuts if you try to drive it in the city while in OD.

Guess I'll try it when its all stop-and-go, which happens a lot down here. Probably not a problem around Redding. Thanks for the reply.

Mt 98 Montero drives me nuts w/ premature shifting around town, so I leave the OD off. On the hiway, I just switch it back on.

The Sequoia doesn't bother me around town; it seems to shift when it's supposed to and wont lug around at 1000 rpm. I turn OD off when towing a trailer in town.
