Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Jerky Transmission", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ive got a 2000 SR5 V8 with 69k miles on it,and the transmission is really starting to tick me off.Especially in peak traffic with stop starting it jumps from first to second gear, really not the smoothest tranny Ive ever driven.Has anyone got a cure for my problem??
I've had good results with Auto-Rx as a cleaner 1000 miles before a flush. I have had mediocre results with the harsh solvent 15-minute cleaners before an ATF flush. http://www.auto-rx.net
I've also had good results with Auto-Rx as an engine internal cleaner 500 miles before an oil change, usually once every 30,000 miles. http://www.auto-rx.com

Glad to hear someone elses tranny doesn't shift smoothly, I was afraid mine might have been bad. I too have the first to second jump. I especially notice it when I don't come to a complete stop at a stop sign (CA stop), and take off, it almost seems like the tranny has to catch up.
Mine used to do that when i got it new. Mostly when i would be slowing down to turn a corner then have to accelerate out of it. it still does it occasionally, but i think the A/C compressor has a lot to do with it to, depending on when it kicks in, and stuff. either i've gotten used to the jump, or the tranny got broken in. But with such an old tundra, you might want to try changing the fluids like kls said.
The erratic trans. shifting is related to the slack in the accererator cable on top of your engine. Note the 2 jam nuts holding the cable. Loosen the two nuts and tighten the cable about 3/16". Problem is solved.
i have an 00 going on 85K, still running very strong.
definately agree on the throttle cable...every time you do an oil change, check the throttle cable (03s don't need to do this, they're DBW), if it's loose, get a couple wrenches and adjust the cable so it's snug again. don't overtighten. it's like brake and shift cables on a bicycle, after it's stretched a bit, it won't stretch much more...doing this at 45K on mine made quite a difference in pedal response...you'd be surprised what a little stretch will cause.
also, i flushed the xmission and refilled with mobil-1 ATF. the first solution may do it for you, but at 69K, if you haven't done a flush + refill, now is the time, since your ATF may be getting old (and breaking down, if it's dino). the flush is extremely easy to do with a friend's help to turn the key.
Can you please post a pic of the cable and 2 jam nuts your talking about ? I just went out to my truck at lunch to see if I could locate them in a hurry and couldn't.

Its right under the black cover with "4.7l V8" on it on the right hand side.Thanx guys it seems to have helped
djj, yeah, you'll have to take off the throttle body cover (the black cover w/v8 on it), one nut each side, 10mm socket. it's easy to spot once the cover's off.

Thanks DeepStealth. I did it the night before last. Real simple adjustment.

Checked mine out today. At 36k miles, I had quite a bit of slack. Took the slack out and the pedal is back to it's responsive self again! Thanks for the tip.

i'll have to try this too. both the atf change and cable adjustment. mine has 40k and seems to clunk when it downshifts under acceleration. sometimes hard to get out of park. checked the fluid cold and it was up to the full/hot mark. I bought it used recently, guess someone just tried to just add more fluid. i'll try some good synthetic. anyone tried redline fluid ?
