Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Disappointed in Spintech", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Just had my #8332 installed and it moanes like a cat in heat. I went with the "quietest" model just to be on the safe side. $120.00 later at 2100-2300 rpm (70 mph) it drones horribly. I don't know how you guys stand it with the smaller models. It's very quiet at idle and at most other rpm except for the above rpm.
I used the stock tail pipe and left the resonator on. Just swapped the muffler. I'm going to put the stock muffler back on. I don't think all this muffler swapping is worth it if your concerned about cabin noise. The best mod so far has been the JBA headers I put on a few months ago. It sounds just right with the stock exhaust system. Buyer beware.
Sorry to hear that you don't like your muffler. Unfortunately, we almost always have to learn the hard way if we don't like the sound or resonance of the aftermarket mufflers. I'm on my second aftermarket muffler (Much to my G/F's chagrin..!!) and hope that the Spin Tech sound is a little more quieter than my FM 40. JB

Ive had my pro street on for 2 days now. I love it. When I heard the Sportsman street in person on a member's ride, I was suprised on how quiet it was. Then I thought, If this is the 2nd loudest, how QUIET was the 3rd loudest?
Sorry about your bad experience. Just remember, These mufflers are performance mufflers, their purpose is power over sound (Even though mine sounds great). Funny thing is that I went with the loudest and I can barely hear it at highway speeds between 60-70 mph.
Just a side note JB-
I think you will be overwhelmed with how quiet your muffler is gonna be. The Sportsman sounds very similar to the TRD exhaust.

get chopper.they make goods ones.but if u think about it toyota has a big center bore that might have something to do with it.when i bought rims i couldnt get a couple i wanted because toyota has a big center bore size.

Thats the same exact reason I took mine off. I posted this on the original link.

To the opposite of the original post, I don't think my pro street is loud enough! I drove another members ride (Tremo) with Flowmaster 50's, I believe, and in my opinion his sounds better than mine. Granted, I'm pretty sure he has duals and they come out all the way to the back, where as I have a single outlet with the pipe cut short (see 1SpiffyTRD's pics, I have the EXACT same setup). I wish my spintech was a lot louder and deeper, but I can hear it in the low RPM range. It could be placebo effect right now, but I notice my truck has more "kick", a kick that I haven't felt since i left sea-level altitude. My girly, as well as my buddy who is a tech at Boulder Toyota, both said they could feel the difference. JB - what difference would it make if I took the resonator off??? Just curious...

The nice thing about the Tundra in stock form it is QUIET, Quiet at idle, Quiet at freeway speeds, and purrs when you step on it, Then a person thinks they can get 1-2 more horse power, by changing the muffler, and they loose the Lexus quiet that the engineers worked at achieving, also the $300-$600 spent, they actually do not go any faster or any quicker, their fuel mileage does not increase but with all that extra noise and money spent they sure think they have a better performing vehicle. Noise to some, is Music to others.

Do some research before such a bold statement. I spent $110 on my muffler, installed. v8toilet is very refined in his knowledge about engines, and has dyno'd his truck bone stock, and with a Spintech Sportsman Street. He gained 4 horsepower, but more importantly, gained 12 ft/lb of torque. You can't tell me that you do not feel 12 more pounds of torque.

You want research here goes, Yes I have an after market exhaust system on my Tundra so I can tell you from experience that it make NO difference in any Way Shape or Form in performance,or GAS mileage, But the maufacturer of the exhaust system has all the test points to back up the 10 HP increase and 12 Ft LBS of torque increase, So you want to know really what happens to a supposed gain in torque and horespower, it is a lot Louder

Ok, I really don't want to turn this into a banter of bullsh*t. In my last post I was referring to a TS member, v8toilet. He has a spintech, and, as I stated, he PROVED a gain of 12 ft. lb of torque and 4 horsepower. You won't feel the 4 horsies, but you'll feel the torque. I had a toyota technician tell me he felt the difference, and it's only got 100+ miles on it. Yes, the companies state a lot of bs, but depending on the muffler, you will see it. And yes, it is louder, and I was far more concerned with keeping my performance and raising the sound level, but 12 ft lb of torque is a welcome addition to my purchase.
Here are his dyno results, independent from any company.
208 HP @ 4800 RPM
285 TQ @ 3400 RPM
With Spintech Sportsman XL muffler, TRD air filter, and stock manifolds
(before someone chimes in with a comment out the air filter, he told me this: "I have found that the stock filter gives better performance than the TRD air filter so don't waste your money on one.")
204 HP @ 4800 RPM
271 TQ @ 3400 RPM
Bone stock
I'm hoping he comes on this thread at some point to give some input.

Well your talking to a person that has an after market exhaust system, (not a friend of mine or another ts member) ,on his vehicle and there is no noticable increase in any thing except noise. Though performance was extremely good before the exhaust system was installed. Here is a question ?where do you think the 4-10 hp comes into play? probably at the upper end of the RPM range, so you could never feel the type of increase when its located on the high end of the RPMS Do you think Toyota's engineering department decided that the engine was to powerful and wanted to limit the power to 245 instead of 250 by useing a restrictive exhaust system. the stock system is pretty good: its A truck

Good lord you are one of the most stubborn iindividuals I have ever run into on this board. Did you check out the specs I clearly laid out? The extra TORQUE (NOT horsepower) comes into play at 3400 RPM!!! Is that the high end? I too have an aftermarket "performance" exhaust system, a spintech, and I am starting to feel the difference. I'm only pointing out that it is not just placebo effect, but there are clearly laid out dyno results proving an extra 4 horsies and 12 torque, in the MIDDLE rpm range, so you can feel it. Can we give this issue a rest now? I'm not sure what else I can say to you to convince you, and I apologize your aftermarket exhaust doesn't do the same thing as a spintech.
