Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Spintech Group Buy Reviews", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Aside from the great job and effort from Jack Burton and 1SpiffyTRD, how do you guys feel about your new mufflers? I realize a lot of you haven't recieved/installed them yet, so post when you get it on.
Personally, it's not as loud as I'd hoped, but I'm starting to feel the performance gains, and the two people that know my truck best and drive my truck (don't worry, it's only on occasion ) have commented on the performance gain. I like the sound a lot at the low RPM/low speed range, but still wish it were throatier and a little louder. At any rate, you can't beat the price (110, installed).
Also, What pipe set-up are you guys running? I had mine cut off just after the last rear hanger so it doesn't stick out, but still makes it to the back.

The sound in the low rpm's is great, but after 2700 or so it sounds stock. The torque is also great because I just went off roading today and it really made a difference out there, stuff I couldnt even accomplish in the past. On the street when I step on it, I love seeing the needle on the speedo just fly! Totally bang for your buck!

The big brown truck arrived today, got the ole muffler! As soon as the guy handed it to me, I really felt how heavy it is! Nice workmanship from what I can tell, I'll head on down to the muffler place tomorrow and see about getting it installed! Woo-Hoo!

Well, I got back from 2 hours of searching around for someone to install my Spintech. What a PITA!!!
The chain muffler shops don't want to work with stainless at all, they claim they have to change the pressure settings on their bending machine! DUHHHHH! I don't need a whole system bent, I just need the muffler cut out and the new one with some straight piping installed!
Can you believe that the one nationally recognized muffler shop wanted to bend me a whole system from the muffler back, and then to only use aluminized pipe? No thanks, I'm not here to pump up your profits that much.
I finally went to a garage where I know the guys because they tow so many cars for us on calls. He was willing and able to install, but also really didn't work with stainless pipes as far as welding them. He did say that all I'd need is about a foot or two of pipe so that he could take the old school bus muffler thats on now off and install the smaller sleeker, Spintech on.
So off to the local auto parts wholesaler, where I had to special order a 10' section of straight stainless 2 1/4" pipe. 10' was the minimum length I could get, and it won't be here until next Tues. So I set up my appointment for install on Thurs. Oct. 2nd. At least I'll have some extra if I need it in the future.
I envy you guys in places that don't need stainless components. The aluminized steel would last me maybe 4 years here where the salt flows freely upon the snowy roads.

I also got the Stainless Steel do I need to but extra SS to get the job done.
I found someone to do it but want to make sure it is done right. Im wonderin why I got the SS since I live in the south maybe Ill sell it at a slight loss seeing as I got a good deal on the group buy. Its the Xl and I could just get an aluminum one and have a little extra money for headers.
I got my SS S/T yesterday. I called Lou's Custom Exhaust in N Reading Ma. I have an 8 am appointmaent tommorrow to have my Y pipe and muffler installed. I can't wait to hear it. Another good thing, I was told I will be driving all day doing deliveries and pick-ups for work tommorrow. I get to listen to the new sound all day.
stcj, you lucky dog! Let us know how you like (love) that spintech sound!
jeff (jsmith) why not keep your muffler. You can use the stainless muffler with the aluminized steel since you don't live in a terribly corrosive environment. I would have done this, but why bother, the aluminized steel will corrode out where I live. All you need is a foot or two of straight pipe to make up the difference between the old muffler and the new.
I'll just hurry up and wait!

I took a sound clip before and after my exhaust install. I need help getting it on the web. I just put my Spintech SS Sportsman XL on today. I drove 176.1 miles with it.
I went to Lou's Custom Exhaust to have my SS Autochrome "Y" pipe and Spintech installed. They said no problem, it'll take one hour. A few minutes later the tech showed me the "Y" pipe won't fit my year truck. There is an O2 sensor located on my stock Y pipe. He would have to modify my new Y pipe to make it work. My Tundra has "FOUR O2 SENSORS", bummer! Plus the SS Autochrome Y pipe is not SS like the Spintech and the rest of my exhaust. He said he could cut my stock Y pipe just after the O2 sensor and custom make a SS Y pipe in no time. I gave him the OK. All said and done, Lou's parts and labor came to $240.00. They did a great job making a SS Y pipe and they revved the truck for me to make both sound clips.
I could feel the differance right any. I guess my ECU learns quick. The tach needle moves much faster with the truck in gear, WOW. The sound is a little loud til just over 3000 rpm. Then it sounds like my stock system, but feels much quicker. Early this morning I was loving the sound. Now, I want to put a resonator on it. It has an obnoxious drone between 1800-2400 rpms. If I floor it threw this rpm range it doesn't drone. Also, if I press the gas pedal very slowly threw this rpm it won't do it. Only when I dive normally will it drone in this rpm, bummer. I made a mistake by letting them cut the stock resonator out.
The new sound is great til it hits the drone zone. Several time starting off from a stop, I noticed people would look to see what was making the cool sound. I didn't varify this yet, but I can tell I am getting better gas milage. The gas pedal is way more responsive, at all rpms. Less effort to do the same work.
Had my Spintech installed yesterday and love it so far! Thanks go out to Jack and all that got the group buy together. The truck is adjusting to it and I am starting to feel the extra power. I guess the red neck is comming out in me, I would like it a little louder. Again, thanks to all that put this together!
I had my Sportsman Street center in/center out muffler installed Wed. What a difference between the FM 40 and the Spin Tech. I certainly feel now that the Butt-O-Meter has been off in regards to the lack of low end loss w/the FM single in/dual out muffler. Either the ST has really improved my low end or the FM was robbing my off the line starts.... V8Toilet is correct in his findings.
The noise factor has "corn-fused" me a little....
The FlowMaster 40 rumbled a lot. I never knew how much of reverb I was getting w/the muffler until I installed the Spin Tech. I never heard the fan or intake sounds w/the FM 40. I can now hear both the fan and my K&N FIPK working. The FM 40 or probably all FM's make the engine sound like a V8 but not my V8. The Spin Tech sounds like I'm actually hearing MY engine's sound and not a generic V8 sound. The Spin Tech has a more "crisper" or higher pitch than the FM40 does. I did not mind the FM "drone" sound at freeway speeds and actually loved it when I jumped on it. The Spin Tech is actually louder in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears than the FM 40 but quiets down after 70mph.
I had the tail pipe dumped right after the muffler and turned down toward the ground. I'll post pics after I have Lon check why I can't upload pics at this time.
Overall, I really like the Spin Tech and hope that my dyno results are good in the lower end rpms. I'll post my results after I do all the testings. JB
Lately Ive noticed a loss in high rpm range. When I step on it at 50mph it goes just to 53mph instead of how it jumped to 60mph stock. too much backpressure i guess. I think the muffler is a little to small to handle a lot of air flow at higher speeds. I need better air flow.

Huh??? The more I think about it, the more I'd rather have the performance I've seen/found than the sound. I just wish the sound was a little deeper...
BUT, it's a helluva lot better than stock, and you can't beat the price!!!
How do you compare the flowmaster to the spintech?
