Thumbs up Purolator Oil Filkter;

OK; Guy's so far so good !! I installed the Micronic Purolator Part# 30001 in the truck a few weeks ago and hve had no problems !! The valve chatter that I was experiencing when I had the Mobil One Filter Part # 102 is gone now. ( Note:Found out that when I took the filter off, the Silicone Check Valve had blown out of its groove seat where it is suppose to seal against the inner lip of the base plate !!! ) So in short, I ended up with a defective filter, and to be honest for that kind of money at $12 Bucks a pop this is inexcusable !!!!! The Purolator seems to be running great, throughout the rpm range the oil pressures have been dead on and I can run an even 7 Quarts of oil in the Engine now. I have also read on this site that several other members here have had good luck with the FL-1A Motorcraft version, which is identical to the TRD 1 Quart Filters that Toyota sells for $9 bucks a pop !!! Go figure, why does Toyota seem to want to SOAK US SO BAD for PARTS !!!!!!!!!

Is the micronic purolator a 1Qt oil filter? I am using the stock replacment Pure One filter but its way small, like a 1/3 Qt size. If I can put in a bigger filter this next oil change that will be cool.

Yes; PointCrossed the Purolator Part # 30001 is a true 1 Quart Capacity oil filter.

Why do people pay those prices for anything with TRD on it? Toyota only charges what people will pay.

Because its the same reason that people buy mane brands instead of the grocery store brand. Its a brand they can Identify with, and have been loyal to even though they have had faults or copy products and put their name on it. I buy TRD products so I can say this is TRD and that is TRD, and I can care less who manufactured it. It said TRD, well it must be good, Right!

Same thing with the bloody red coolant.........

Anyways,

I was going to get a TRD filter but I will stick with the Purolator 30001 that Ziggy tested.

I think it all depends on the product. With clothes, there are many different levels of fabric, stitchnig, whatever....and I have found you kinda get what you pay for unless to head off into designer land.

Contrary to what my many will think, Sears does not have factories producing batteries (Die Hard), tires (Guardsman) or Lawnmowers (Craftsmen). They are a remarketer.

I bet TRD, Motocraft and even Delco are along those same lines. Probably the same guy in Juarez applying all the different labels.

My $.02 and keep the change.

Default $2.99 Fram for me

I just loaded up on Fram 3614 for my V6. It is a small filter. Where can I get that bigger one? Is is designed for another vehicle and just happens to thread on the tundra too?

Default K&N Oil Filters???

Anyone here uses K&N oil filters? They supposedly have superior high flow and the manufacturer claims that the filter captures 90% of contaminants(no independent SAE tests to confirm this). The inside of the filter looks to be of very high quality. Anyone feels that the high flow is a tradeoff for less filtration?

I have a V-6 too and went to get some filters at my local Toyota Dealer, they were on sale for 3.86 and guess what I ended up at home with? The filter for the V-8. Well I just got the filters because they were on sale and had some of the stock Toyota V-6 filters at home and looked at the two side by side. Inside they looked the same, according to Toyota spec. they have the same pressure relief valve pressure, just the V-8 is physically a little larger. I tried to start a thread on this some time ago but no one was interested. I think the V-6ers could use the larger V-8 filter and get larger filter capacity with no problem. The parts guy when I took them back got them both out of the box and we did a side by side too, not sure how much filtering media is inside but they are similar in all regards except heigth. I really wonder if there would be any benefit? I guess you would have to do oil analysis and cut open the filters to really see if they are even near the filter capacity. Larger size might never be used. I have an older 83 Toyota that I have used the PH8A or the 30001 for the past 20 years. In fact when the 83 first came out it used to match in the look-up books for the 1qt. filter, now it is the smaller size one.

Well I know that fram, penske, supertech, all the cheapo brands of oil filters all list the V6 and V8 as the same oil filter. I think even the 4 cylinder Tacos are listed as the same filter, as are most of the old T-100s. I dont know why the V8 filter would be any bigger.

K&N oil filters are made by Champion Laboratories, as are Mobil 1, Supertech, STP, Bosch Premium, Lee, Champ, Luberfiner, and probably other brands of filters.

The K&N filter seems to be made for modified engines with high-flow oil pumps installed.

For filtration efficiency numbers, you need to know what percentage of what size particles were trapped. 90% filtering efficiency is meaningless without the particle size. What you need to know is the size of particle trapped with 98.5% efficiency and the size with 50% efficiency. Usually, you'll see something in the 20 micron size @ 50% and 30 micron @ 98.5%. I'd prefer maybe 7 micron @ 50% and 15 or 20 micron @ 98.5%, and with the flow rate equal to an OEM filter.
