Default prefilling oil filter

How many of you all do this or do you just put it on dry and let the oil pump do its thing.
Do you think if the motor was run recently (in the last 20-30 mins) and the use of synthetic oil (M1) there is any chance of damage from dry startup with a dry filter???
Todd

I usually prefill the filter about 1/3 of the way. The angle of the filter required to spin it on precludes filling it any fuller else you will dump oil everywhere when you try to spin it on.

I have always put mine on dry for the last 30 years, NEVER had a problem. Only takes about 2 seconds for the oil pressure to start reading on the gauge and the system still has an oil film in it at least. Although pre filling certainly cant hurt.

I also can not think of ANY shop OR dealership that pre fills.

second that. I've changed my own oil on all my vehicles for 20 some years now and never pre-filled with no problems.

It's the way that I had been doing it also (dry) but I thought that I would get the general consenses from the group. I have yet to ever hear any upper valvetrain noise on "dry startup" so I figure that no damage is being done.
Thanks
Todd

Used to never bother prefilling and like others have posted never encountered a problem and am confident I never would. Now having said that I am now prefilling just because it makes me feel better to see the oil pressure light go out faster and it really doesn't add much to the effort does it? I do this on all the vehicles whether we're talking tractors, motorcycles, cars etc. wherever it can be done i.e., vertical or near vertical filter mounting. Dave.
