Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "DRIVE BY WIRE 2003 Tundra!!! (throttle cable)", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
How many of you folks out there knew that their 2003 V8 Tundra is totally drive by wire (no throttle cable?) Or, at least mine is. I have a 2003 2wd V8 SR5 Access cab with the TRD - Sport package. I noticed this morning while showing off the mill that it didn't have a throttle cable. My dads 2002 V6 does however have a throttle cable. This probably opens up a whole realm of other problems that can occur.

Only the 2003's have the throttle position sensor instead of a throttle cable. I think that's what stryker is talking about.

They all have a throttle cable. The cable pulls a TPS which activates the electric motor for the butterfly valve to the intake. So, your gas pedal only rotates the mechanical side of the TPS...

SCDTRD, my tundra has no throttle cable at all. the gas pedal is attached to a little electronic aparatus that only has a wire harness connected to it. No cable at all. So maybe it is called the "foot position sensor."

That's right. It's called a throttle position sensor. True drive by wire. Makes it kinda tough to install NOS.

2uz-fe engine
The ETCS-i (Electronic Control System-intelligent) continues to be used from the ’02 model. However, on the ’03 model, the accelerator cable has been discontinued and an accelerator position sensor has been provided on the accelerator pedal. A no-contact type throttle position sensor has been adopted on all models.

Thanks for being more clear on the nhparrot. Accelerator position sensor. Pretty cool.

Same as on the Sequoia. There is a difference (I have had them both).
Thing I hate most about the '03 is the lack of ability to have full throttle on take off.
I have an 01, and I can't stand the fly by wire throttle. I know it's good for the engine and for reliablility, but I hate it when I can't get all the power out of the motor when I need it. I drive on hilly two lane roads where you need all the power you can get when passing semi's. There are times when you can floor the Tundra, but it won't accelerate well, and sometimes it's okay. It dangerous (and embarrassing) to abort a passing maneuver and scurry behind the vehicle you were trying to pass. Besides the lack of take-off power, you also don't get the instantaneous engine feedback (if you ride sportbikes you'll know what I'm talking about) with fly by wire; it's like there's an invisible 'rubber band' between the throttle cable and the butterly valve. I will never get a performance vehicle with fly by wire throttle, at least if they program it like the Tundra's system. Too conservative for me.

Couldn't you just manually drop the transmission down a gear or two and over-ride this devise?
Of course you would have to upshift before redline.
