Default What is the best oil and filter to use?

Hey guys and gals, I have a brand new v8 Tundra and want to know what you guys think the best oil and filter combination to use when changing the motor oil and why you believe that. I live in Oklahoma (hot in summer, cold in winter) and drive a considerable amount of highway miles as well as in town miles.
Thanks

Brent

I've been using and prefer Mobile One and the Toyota oil filters.

I do the same thing as Possum...Mobil 1 and Toyota OEM filters every 5,000 miles.

I live on the South Plains of West Texas--the climate is very similiar to Lawton's. I changed the factory fill at a little past 1,000 miles to Mobil 5W-30 conventional oil; then at a bit past 4,000 miles to Mobil 1 5W-30. Filter is Toyota 90915-20004. I'll use Mobil 1 5W-30 throughout the cold weather and will change to Mobil 1 10W-30 for our Summer heat. I shall continue to use the Toyota filter listed above for so long as it is available. Assuming it is ever superceded with a different filter, I'll likely then change to Purolator Pure 1 in the quart-sized filter various recent posts have discussed. I do not have the expertise to claim these are the 'best' filters and oil, but few would dispute they're among the best among readily available brands. I change oil and filter both at 4,000 to 5,000 mile intervals. Hope this helps you, neighbor!

I got a sweet deal with my dealership to where I get free oil changes till 36000 miles. But as we all know, dealerships suck. So my service manager gives me the OEM filter, and I use Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic every 5000k. My own mechanic tells me that synthetic oil contains many cleaners that will strip the engine, so it's not good to change the oil too much, hence why Mercedes changes their oil every 10k, (we have 2). Anyhow, he told me every 8000 would be fine for my kind of driving (1000 miles per week) however I settled for every 5000.

Oh I forgot, after the free filters run out, I'm switching to Mobil 1 filters, they're bigger and specific for synthetic oils. Hope this helps

Man everyones a critic of the dealer. Ya all know I work for one, and I know I don't suck. If you bring your car to me, you can expect better Toyota serivce then anywhere. I use the Toyota/Lexus 20004 filter. (Not all Toyota dealers carry them, they're more expensive) As for oil I use Royal Purple, same price as Mobil one, but I don't like using a company like Mobil that buys the majority of oil from the Arabs.

Mobil one is one of the few oils that are true synthetic oils. I use Mobil one 5W-30W with the Toyota filter and change every 5000 miles.

Sorry, but hey ALOT of the citizens of the OPEC oil countries hate us, I buy gas from Sunoco or Hess (They use the least amount of foreign oil). I feel the same bought oil, maybe it's dumb, but just my 2cents.

I use Mobile 1 SS 10w/30 and Toyota filter. I just got back my first used oil analysis on 5700 mile oil and the numbers look very good. I drive 50/50 city/highway and towing on the weekends. The M1 still had a lot of life in it. The lab recommend I go to 6500 at least, on the next test.

How would numerous oil changes with synthetic strip an engine? It is all metal inside so I highly doubt that it would strip the metal of anything. I used to do 3000 mile oil changes with Mobil 1 on my old Camry V6 with no problems. Engine had 150K miles on it when I sold it and it still was running strong.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but I think many if not most Mercedes come with conventional oil, except the AMGs, and I heard that up until at least recently Mercedes recommended 10K+ oil changes even for their cars that used conventional oil. I wouldn't even run 5K miles on conventional, let alone 10k. I believe Honda has also extended their oil change intervals to 10K as well which seems even more dangerous since fuel dillution could more easily thin their recommended 5W-20 oil over that time.

Sinclair gas is from Wyoming and Im pretty sure that Phillips 66 does not use Arab oil either.

I am using Mobil 1 with the OEM filter. I came about that combo just like you, read it here. Ive never tore down an engine that used this stuff, so Ill go on these guys word.

P.S.

Is there a point in time when you should stop using pure synthetic oil in your engine/drivetrain? For instance, switch to regular dino oil after 100k miles?
