Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "underdrive pully feedback please", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I remember all the original discussion about this pulley and all of the different opinions. I haven't seen any comments here for about a month now. I don't want to re-ignite that mess, but was just wondering if anyone has seen or heard of this pulley causing ANY trouble at all? It seems most everyone is happy with them. I guess they have not been around long enough for any long term evaluation. Is everyone still satisfied with them?
Thanks...
Mike

Taste great, less filling! No problems at all for me and I was one of the first to finally get their's after the long wait. I installed it around the beginning of October.

I used to hit 300 hwy miles with 1/4 of a tank left. Now I hit 300 hwy miles and have 3/8 of a tank left. I've notice that it has the same amount of power with less pedal effort. More noticeable at hwy speed. Can't go wrong unless you have a S/C. Oh, and still have headlight dimming at dead stops when rpm drops to 600 or less. Mine idles in drive at 450rpm warmed up.

The only very small issue I've seen, is a slight dimming of lights (really have to look for it) with all accessories including fogs on at idle in drive. In park the r's are up just enough to take the dimming away.
On the good side, more snap of the line, can tell slight increase in power up a steep hill, smoother and quiter idling. All in all I'd say a good mod for the price. And installation is easier then it sounds. I really cant comment on mileage, I drive mostly back country roads with hills. If mileage increased it wasn't by much though.
I've had mine on since ~Oct,2003 with probably 7000 miles. No problems and although I was originally reluctant to post anything about it in the absence of any real dyno proof, there is a discernable increase in the ubiquitously phrased "seat of the pants".

Did anyone notice any knocking sounds on acceleration or deceleration? I'm curious as to know if anyone has had any bad experiences with this pulley. Who has been using one for more than 6-months?

I haven't had one on for 6 months but only for about 2. I've also had a nitrous system on it for about the same amount of time just to help stress the engine components.
No knocks at any time.
The only bad experience I had was buying it.

Are you asking about a timing knock, or a main / rod bearing knock from excessive crank wear?

Something like that! The problem with public forums is that any one person that has the pulley, reads this thread, and has had something happen to there engine might be inclined to not respond because they would be embarrassed to say so. There is probably more than 90% chance that nothing is going to happen. This is the first production V8 that I have ever known to run reliable without a harmonic damper. The slight damping properties from the serpentine belt itself must be just enough to squelch those harmonic vibrations. I know some four cylinder engine don't need one because they have short crankshafts but all the V8 engines that I can think of do.
We had a huge discussion/ debate about this when the group buy was being discussed as some of you might remember.

That is the reason when I posted above I stated I did not want to re-ignite that discussion. We are just trying to see if the ones that have run it have had any problems yet. I know it will take more time for a long term answer.
Now, what I should have said is...Who has the most miles on their Tundra with this pulley?
I would think the people that post in here would not be afraid to say if they were having trouble. Maybe somebody in Texas that has been running one longer can respond. I don't remember when the guy in Houston first made them. (I think he was in Houston).
Mike

Had mine for a few thousand miles I think, and no problems. I do get slight dimming of my headlights though.
