Question Exhaust Pipe Diameter?

What is the diameter of a stock tundra exhaust pipe? When I measured I came up with 2.5 inches. If it was 2.25 would a muffler with 2.5 in connections fit or could a muffler shop make it fit?

Hey HoggerVT,

I've been told our stk piping diameter is 2.25", I thought it was 2.5". I just had a Spin Tech muffler that was ordered as a 2.25" single in/out installed and they used 2.5" piping in front from the 3rd cat and 2.25" piping out. The way it was explained to me was that most mufflers are made to be 3.0" in/outs and the shops either enlarge or close the muffler openings to fit the existing exhaust pipes.....JB

So basically any competent muffler shop should be able to make it fit?

Yes,

I'd pick the shop that had the oldest car model chicky posters... on the wall.... They shouldn't have any trbl installing your described situation. What muffler did you get or are looking at ? JB

Well, I just today ordered a Flowmaster 50 series. I was a little hesitant because the case length is 17 inches as opposed to the 21.5 of the stock muffler but figured since its the last thing in the exhaust line it shouldnt matter. I wanted the ballsy flowmaster sound but thought the 40 was a little bit of overkill for me. How do you feel about the 50 series? I was going to go to my local Monro and get my oil changed/the new muffler put on to kill two birds with one stone. Does monro have a reputation with dealing with aftermarket muffler installs?

I measured my exhaust pipe after the muffler and found it to be approximately 2-3/8" OD or right at 60mm OD - kind of an in-between size for standard 2-1/4" and 2-1/2" OD exhaust piping and mufflers (most aftermarket muffler inlets and outlets are designed to slip over the exhaust pipe, i.e. a 2-1/4" muffler will have inlets and outlets with an inside diameter just slightly larger than 2-1/4" so that they can slip over the 2-1/4" pipe outside diameter).

No Worries on the FM 50...

You should like that muffler. I just switched from a FM40 single in/dual outs to a single in/out Spin Tech. Here's a pic of the 2.... http://www.tundrasolutions.com/photo...hp?photo=11035

Big difference in the off the line low end torque w/the ST over the FM but you should like the FM 50. I loved the sound of my FM when I punched it but the St has a cleaner or less rumble sound than the FM's....

The shop will have to add a piece of pipe either before or after the muffler. I suggest that they place the extra piece before the muffler to keep the muffler/sound a little further back from the cab..... Good luck. Please post some pics of your install if you can.... JB

Good luck, they may or may not. I went there to try and get my Spintech installed. They don't bend or otherwise carry stainless steel pipe, and being from VT. you are going to need it, unless you like giving the muffler shops money. They will sell you anything as long it's aluminized steel. As soon as I heard they don't use stainless, I was outta there, so to really answer your question, I had a system bent there for my '67 Ford (never sees winter) and they put on my Dynomaxs with that purchase. That was about 10 years ago, so things might have changed.

Do you have stainless pipes? I'd love to get them but just don't have the $$ right now.... How long do you think whatever monro gives me will last? What comes stock on the tundra? Would I be better off going to a private shop?

I live in So. Kali so I don't need stainless steel piping. Johnny Law just paid around $75.00 for a 10' section of s/s piping for his s/s muffler install. If money is short, just go w/a shop you feel comfortable with for the install. Go w/whatever they give you as far as the piping used. (It'll probably be aluminumized steel.) You can always come back later and have better (s/s) piping installed. You should get at least 2-3 years of service w/the aluminum. It'll probably depend on how much chemicals/salt on your roads. I don't know what kind of piping the stk piping is. I paid $50.00 for them to cut the old muffler and weld the new one on w/a 14" tail pipe. JB

KLS is right, the stock system that comes on a Tundra, and many other cars and trucks, is stainless steel. It doesn't hold a shine well, it actually looks pretty cruddy, it is harder to bend and tends to split or "blow out" if you don't have the right tools, BUT, it doesn't rust out and is fairly durable. More durable than the aluminized steel where we live Hogger.

Private shops may be better, member stcj went to a private shop and they hooked him up with a nice system, maybe PM him for details. It all comes down to shopping around for the best deal, not the best price.

Since I put the system on, I find myself driving without the radio on, most of the time. When the radio is on, the volume is set so I can still hear the exhaust tone. I'm still going to put a resonator on it for that RPM range 1800-2400 that drones, but I am getting very use to hearing the sound

LOL, I'm going to as well. I picked up my straight pipe yesterday from the auto supply house. That pipe reminds me of a chain link fence post, only bigger. Tomorrow, 10/2, I get my system installed. Woo-Hoo!
