Question How long have you ticked? (Exhaust Man.)

This question has two purposes:
1) Get an idea how long ppl have "lived with" the Tundra Exhaust Manifold leak.
2) Gather how many Tundras have this problem. Perhaps ALL could write Toyota.

How long have your Tundra ticked due to an Exhaust Manifold leak?

I've put up with one for about 7,000 mi already. D

About a month after i purchased my truck in may '02, i noticed a ticking noise from the passenger footwell area. long story short, it was a faulty wrist pin, and 2 pistons, and 2 connecting rods were replaced. no more ticking.

Default For way to long

Mine ticked for nearly 10,000 miles, until it got to the point that it was just embarrassing to drive out of the parking lot. Toyota wouldn't replace them at 40,000. I tried to explain to them that the problem was there before warranty was up, but I just didn't realize what the problem was until it got a lot worse. they wanted 1300 dollars or so to replace. So I just bought JBA headers to replace the stock ones. the construction is much, much, much better and the added horses were nice too. Mainly on the mountains on interstate, truck doesn't shift down as much. I would definetly write toyota if people were interested, because it was definetly a problem.

Mine started ticking around 26K, I tried to get toyo to replace when it got loud to the point that people were commenting on it. Wasn't covered under warranty at 38K (I thought they would be covered under emmision warr, but apparently not). I bought JBA headers and put them on at 40K - they have been on now for about 120K with no problems. The stock manifolds were cracked at front cylinder on both sides. Passenger side was actually seperated, driver side just had a crack. Definately bad design. I have never had to replace an exhaust manifold on any vehicle I have driven until well past 100K.

I have what I believe to be an exhaust manifold leak and now that it is getting colder, its getting louder. What do I do to tell if that is for sure what it is?

I have also started to notice a ticking sound from the glove box area

If it is the mani's how inclined are dealers to replace them with TRD headers under warranty? I'm @ 27k

I've been thinking of replacing the cracked manifold with JBA. How much would this change cost including installation? D

I recently put JBA Headers on my 2000 10 days ago and I am still getting a constant ticking noise (much louder in the morning) but it NEVER goes away I have tried better Gas, Different Oil and can't figure this out. It is driving me nut's it started about 4 mos ago. May try the BG 44K fuel additive. My true feeling is that it is a bad injector or the valves need to be adjusted.

every cold season since the first after when i bought the truck used in 01. they were both replaced once, the problem went away, after driving home heard several loud, sharp cooling-metal-style cracks from the driver's side, which now leaks again.

it's very difficult for the dealership to pinpoint because they need cold weather, an early morning, and only ten seconds to hear it clearly. they are not inclined to replace them with trd headers, i asked, they quoted me the standard price but were willing to r&r the manis under warranty.

use a stethescope(sp) or a hose to listen for it.

save your money for headers.

Mine makes a tick sound too that isn't the headers. I replaced the cracked manifold. I'm guessing the other sound is valves too. Everyone here talks about our trucks being noisy due to the dual overhead cam design, so it is something I have accepted. I will say that the loud annoying tick is gone with the headers, and I firmly belive mine are not leaking. If you complain to toyota about the valve noise, or whatever it may be let me know. If it happens to be valves I doubt any replacement unless they are out of tolerance. I had an old 90 model pickup that made a good bit of valve noise and toyota would not do anything about it, because it still was within spec, even with the noise. I personally checked them myself and they were right, they were within spec, but still made an annoying sound. I currently have 220,000 miles on the truck and still drive it when I need a change from my tundra.
