Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Remote Mounted Turbo Kit for Tacoma/Tundra", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hey I bought one of these kits and installed it myself. I upgraded to a Garret gt35R TURBO . I really dont know how much power I am Making but I can beat c5 corvettes up to 100 mph after that I hit my governor. I too have a g-tech and my numbers were very different. 0-60 was 5.1 seconds and 1/4 mile was 13.2 at 105. When i get some $ i wil have it dynoed. my truck is stock everywhere else. I do all of this with only 4psi of boost. I plan to go to 8 psi but only after I get some more mods. for now I am glad i dint buy the TRD. I have heard lots of problems . This kit only voids my intake and exhaust warrenty I already took it by my dealership and asked , since there are no mods to the engine physically the muffler and the air box is all you have to remove. This is a darn good deal. Speak to Rick at sts and he will send you to a local dealer for a lower price . I paid 3600 fo mine plus I upgraded to the gt35r for only 300 buck more. I wll try to post pics once I learn .
Pics would be great. Could you describe the difficulty of the install and the tools needed?

4 psi and you can hang with vettes when a TRD S/C at 6 psi wont come close
6psi from a supercharger is very different than let say for example a garret gt35r turbo. The trd supercharger @ 6 psi flows max 450 cfm when a gt35 r flows 950 cfm. the trd supercharger cant support 800 hp the gt35r can. this is why I upgraded. The turbo uses waste gases for driving the impeller and the trd uses parasitic energy ( belts). so when you get 6 psi from the trd you actually took power away from your truck to get power lets say 45 % over stock, turbos like a big gt35r dont steel power they scavenge it from wasted exhaust and in return give power like 80% over stock. the boost is much cooler and more dense than the supercharger, which actually overheats the air with no way to cool it. I have video of the vette race. i will post it soon. I din't beat him but he could not pull away from me. anyone in houston can email me and i will let them see the kit. the install took me about 9 hours because i refuse to follow directions but if you read the color picture manual it should take you no longer than 6 hours. draw back to the kit is you will love it so much that you wont be able to keep your foot off the gas . otherwise i have seen better gas milage on the hwy when not racing.
Those G-tech performance charts at STS showing before & after Turbo are telling an important story. Normally aspirated engines have a hard time "breathing" at 4,300 ft elevation. UTAH is where STS offices are, so of course they offer 0-60 MPH and HP / TORQUE charts for that altitude.
The charts show a 36% increase in peak torque, very nice. A 20% reduction in 0-60 MPH elapsed time.
That same Turbo truck from the charts will kick serious butt at sea level, when it has relatively dense air to work with (= bigger boost). Yes, it will need some serious octane gas to do it, but that goes for any hi-perf engine. So think about this before raising the BS flag very high. I think this turbo stuff is for real, and a great alternate (or addition) to other hi-perf mods. For now I am waiting for my S&S Headers to arrive (2 more weeks?).

point made, id watch your drive line though if you havent already, if your gtech is remotely accurate, youre making 350-380 to the ground as a guesstimate. doubling your boost will make 400+ and i dont know if the stock driveline can handle the abuse. also how do you pass emissions??

I would sell some Halliburton stock for this system. I wonder though if there is any systems out there that are not remote located.

the kit is 100 percent smog leal. and will be c.a.r.b aproved in 3 weeks. the only thing you remove is the stock cat back, all stock catalitic converters stay on. since the turbo muffles the sound you get a flowmaster sound with a mean whistle like an 18 wheeler on a hwy. I actually added a blow of valve and will soon ad an intercooler so i can run 8psi safely and not backpedal the boost. I get cool whissssh in between shifts.
I spoke to Rick @ STS today. I was looking for a dealer in my area. He has a dealer that is working on Tundras in Texas. Thats right, Mike is working with STS also. He is writing programs for UNIchip for turbo applications. He took one of the trucks to the track with the STS system, 4.5lbs of boost, and unichip, and ran a 13.45" QM. People are going to Mike and having the Supercharger removed and STS system put on instead.
Rick also said that more people where he is are getting the turbos instead of the supercharger because the price, and hp differences. 65%hp boost compared to 40-45 for TRD charger.
Take it for what it is worth, I know a few of us members said some things (me included) that were not kind about Mike, but the guy is doing alot of testing for these trucks, and there is hard data out there.
I am going to get this system.
