Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Timing belt replacement", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
To read of all the work that must be done on the Toyota V8 engine, 11 Hrs- Timing belt, cam and crank seals, valve adjustment, and water pump. I was considering a new 05, I may look at the Titan and F-150 line, to see if they require the same replacement of timing components, ect.

Most of the items do not actually NEED replacement when the belt is done, but it's a matter of prevention. With the belt only needing replacement every 90k, it is not wise to hope that the rest of the items last until 180k when the belt becomes due again. The seals will probably be fine, and MAY last until 180k, but if they don't, the leaking oil will hose your new belt.
Honestly... at the dealer it's about $700, maybe $900 at most. That's only a penny a mile... or about 10 bucks every thousand miles.
Most engines that have belts require changes at 60k. Those that have chains have no specified change interval, but it's usually smart to plan a change somewhere between 150k and 200k. The water pump will most likely need change before then.
As far as Ford... the trucks ARE better, but for my '91 Escort, I used to spend, in a year, more than I spent in the entire 225k on my '94 Toyota p/u, and so far, my Tundra's cost per mile, including fuel, is well under $0.15

Do I really need all these parts just to do a timing belt change?
13568-59095 timing Belt $48.07
Obviously
13503-50011 idler S/A, Timing $73.94
13540-50030 tensioner Assy $46.47
13505-50030 idler S/A Timing $72.99
Tough call. These are dry parts, and could easily last to 180k, but if they don't, you could have a serious problem. If an idler seizes, the belt will soon break or strip teeth. If the tensioner fails, you'll slip teeth. Either one will likely result in valve/piston contact. $200 now v/s $3000 in 25k?
90311-38065 seal, type cam 2X $11.90
90311-43006 seal, type crank $7.32
Another tough call. They'd probably be okay, but if they don't make it to 180k, then you're in for a new belt (again) when they go. Not easy to monitor unless they start leaking big-league, and at that point, your belt IS dust.
16100-59275 water pump $112.51
Pretty standard "gimmie" for this job. Not likely to make it to 180k, and quite a few have reported severe staining under the weep hole.
16572-0F010 lower radiator hose $20.61
16571-0F010 upper radiator hose $13.41
90916-03100 thermostat $10.91 (TRD thermo 160 deg. $45.00)
16346-50010 gasket, thermo $2.97
They're off for the job. The hoses should probably be replaced (though I got 225k out of the stock hoses on my '94), but for the extra $50, I think it's well spent not to have to worry about it. My '94's thermo went at about 160k... stuck open.
90080-91172 belt, v-ribbed $19.07
16620-0W036 tensioner assy. $163.51
These could be done at any time. I'm not sure I'd put the $160 into the tensioner if it weren't making noise or felt smooth. I've never had one go bad, but keep in mind that it is a "dry" part with a sealed bearing or bushing, and it runs pretty close to full engine RPM. Think of this as a good opportunity to go to an underdrive pulley
Out of all of the above, the one that I find most questionable, value wise, is the serpentine belt tensioner. That's a lot of money, and IMHO, offers far more than "an ounce of prevention"... that's more of a "pound of prevention", especially considering that it's failure is not catastrophic. The rest of the parts are either simply too difficult to get to so as to make it wise to do with the belt, or in the case of the hoses, belt, and thermostat, cheap, and already "off" for the job. You've basically got $441 in parts, excluding the tensioner, which would bring it to about $605... pretty significant increase.

This is what was on my work order from Toyota. The rest was labor. You only need to change the idler pulleys and tensioner if they are bad. Technically thermostat and water pump are optional--but not a bad idea. While you're in there, might as well change the serp belt.
90080-91172 belt, v-ribbed $19.07
And be prepared to repair any hoses that are damaged during break down...
Upgrades: PA 3" Body Lift, Powertrax No-Slip rear, Detroit ezLocker front, Fabtech/Fox front, Wheeler's AALs, TC Front Diff Drop, 16 x 8 MB Wheels, 285/75R16 Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs, Pioneer Head Unit, Infiniti Reference speakers [front and rear], 150 W bridged amp to bandpass enclosure, 6 CD changer with IR remote, iPod mini and xm hardwired into stereo, Toyota drop in bedliner, and Tonneau cover
13568-59095 timing Belt $48.07
My timing belt was in great shape, easily could have gotten a few k moreout of it.
13540-50030 tensioner Assy $46.47
The new one came pre-loaded, making install a little easier. My old tensioner seemed fine though.
90311-43006 seal, type crank $7.32
To cut down on time, did not replace. Not leaking as well as cam seals. All 3 were fine.
16572-0F010 lower radiator hose $20.61
16571-0F010 upper radiator hose $13.41
Replaced both. They were both in great shape though.
16100-59275 water pump $112.51
Replaced. It was leaking through the weep hole and shaft seal.
90916-03100 thermostat $10.91
replaced.
16346-50010 gasket, thermo $2.97
Didn't use. Hidden in bottom of box. Didn't find it till I was cleaning up. reused old one no leaks.
All in all, I'm pretty comfortable with what I have done and actually( in a way ) looking foward to the next time. That will be most likely before the 180k mark. No biggie, I love working on my truck and I just know I can trim off a few hours!
BTW: The prices I recieved from our sponsor, partznet ( link @ top of page) were a bit better than these listed here.

Is there more than one timing belt pulley that needs to be replaced for this job? Or is there only one Timing belt tensioner that needs to be replaced?

look at this pict for example there is 2 timing belts idler's on the Tundra plus one timing belt tensioner that need's to be replaced...water pump appear's to not be located near the timing belt's or power by the timing belts which lead me to believe if the pump goes bad it doesnt damage your engine (note timing belt is behind the main belt's)..

That photo doesn't show any detail of the timing belt assembly except for the cam wheels. You're looking at the seprentine belt assembly. What appears to be the water pump is the fan drive pulley. The one in the center with the four bolts on it is the fan pulley, and is not connected to the water pump. The one on the far side is the tensioner, the one on top is an idler.
Here, the yellow trace is the serpentine belt, the blue trace is what little we can see of the timing belt.

Rlockyer that's what i thought too and why i stated in my post behind the main belt's (drive belt as they call it) . The water pump is an yellow on this picture right(link coming soon) also do you know if the timing belt powers the water pump or is the belt for the water pump on the drive belt?
Thank's
ps what item's or part's are you replacing when your's is getting done? I was thinking all the cam seal's (2), (1) timing belt tensioner's @$33.00 from my toyota part's quote online source ,and the water pump @ $92.00(including the o ring gasket's) and i think that's all ..the idler cost $55.00 each and 2 are required inless mine are bad i am not replacing it. This type of work makes me a little edgey because i want this work done right however trying to research what other's have done and make sure the work is done right and that i havent missed anything on this type of work...

That the AC compressor, not the water pump. The power steering pump is the large pulley on the other side.

Timing belt. The water pump is completely contained within the timing belt covers and cannot be seen with the engine installed and operational.

I'll just do the same as romar... belt, tensioner (not the idlers), water pump, thermo, and hoses. I'm not going to mess with any of the seals.
Though I am approaching 90k, the truck is only 24 months old. Seals don't deteriorate from miles, they deteriorate from age and exposure to ozone.
Of course, the same could be said of the belt itself, but I'm not going to gamble those odds.
I'll probably do the seals at 180k.

I took a couple of pics while I was doing my timing belt. I was trying to get a full shot of the front of the engine when it was stripped down to the water pump. This was a little tricky due to the fact that I did not remove my A/C condenser and my camera does not have a wide angle lens. None the less in the attached shot you can see the water pump and the two idlers.
