Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "fuel economy poll", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
In an effort to get to the bottom of the fuel economy debate and factor out the variables as much as possible, I thought I would start a poll. Maybe we will see a correlation between certain variables which we can all benefit from. After reading the post titled "15mpg is something wrong", I saw that people were posting fuel consumptions from 12 to 21+. That is a huge difference! By answering the following questions, I hope to find a pattern. All input is greatly appreciated.
1. What is your vehicle type? (year, model, engine, transmission, 2x4/4x4, cab style, wheel size, any packages)
ex. 2003, tundra, V8, automatic, 4X4, access cab, P265, towing package
Notes:
The towing package may have an effect because is has a trans cooler and a heavier alternator. You can't create energy so it has to come from some place!
2. What type of fuel do you use? (brand and octane)
3. Where do you do most of your driving? (what state)
4. What type of driving do you do and at what speed? (mountains, highway, city, suburbs)
ex. highway - 70, or suburbs - 40 average.
5. What type of driver are you? (slow and easy, floor it)
6. How many miles are on your truck?
7. Do you have any after market parts and/or modifications? (air filters, exhaust headers or duels, larger tires, lift kits, etc.)
8. Are there any other factors that may influence your reading? (like towing, etc.)
Thank you for your cooperation. Hopefully something good will come from this.

Sorry, I have one more questions which may influence your fuel economy.
9. What type of oils/lubricants do you use? (brand/type/viscosity for your engine, transmission, diff)
ex. mobil 1/synthetic/5w-30 engine, mobil 1/synthetic/ATF, etc.
You may also want to factor tires into the equation. When I switched from the stock BFG's to Michelin LTX's I lost about 1/2 a mpg. I was to be very diligent about tracking my mileage for the first couple of years I owned my truck. Now I just fill it and go.
1)2001 V8 auto 4WD Limited Access Cab
2)Exxon or BP/Amoco - 87 or 89

7) Tonneau Cover, TRD cat back exhaust, TRD air filter.
8) I rarely tow.
9) Mobil1 fluids throughout, engine,trans & diffs
I avg high 16 sometimes 17 mpg.

8. normal driving, no towing
9. Mobil 1 in engine, tranny, & rear
Before 285's, I averaged about 16-17 mpg with 265's. Still on my first tank with bigger tires. Hopefully, I'll get about 14-16 mpg (fingers crossed) .

8. normal driving. Occasional offroad, but not mileage not considered in this post.
9. Synthetic in engine; 40/38 PSI in tires (front/rear)
Getting about 15 to 15.5 mpg in town, heavier foot, maybe 16 mpg in town when taking it easy. Highway with smooth sailing at 65 to 70 mpg, getting around 17 mpg. Best tank was nearly 22 mpg at around 20K. Biggest influence on my mpg is driving style. If I keep my foot out of it, and let it coast when possible, I gain around 1 mpg.

(Oh, and my city-crawler: '05 Prius - No mods, just 55 mpg)
[color=Black][font=Times New Roman]This is my first reply to a thread but I thought it was worth my 2 cents. Just returned from a week trip from Pennsylvania to Myrtle Beach and Charleston, SC. Put on approximately 1400 miles in 5 days. I averaged 18.6 mpg. This astounded me as I had never gotten above 17 mpg before. I can only attribute this improved performance to the cruise control and relatively flat turrain. My vehicle stats follow:
2001 Tundra Limited, V8, 4X4, TRD package, all standard factory equipment including tires. 26,000 miles. No special lubricants or additives.

6)7500 miles, mostly highway (tercel is for in-town driving)
7) putting go rhino grill guard on now (50 lbs on front of truck)
8)sometimes I go 200 hwy miles with furniture in back. gas mileage 1-2 mpg less
9)exxon 5W-30 dino, stock elsewhere
I get window sticker gas mileage. 16 city, 19 highway

5. 80%/20% (Slow & Easy/Floor It).
6. Approximately 10 000 Miles.
7. No applicable aftermarket accessories.
8. A lot of towing during the summer (about 50% or so).
9. Mobil-1 Engine Oil, all others are factory.
I have tracked my fuel consumption very carefully since day 1. I enter the information into a spreadsheet on my computer at every fill up. I have an average to date of 14.48 Miles/Gallon; with a high of 17.27 and a low of 10.50.

I usually get 14 mpg in the city
I usually get 17 mpg on the HWY not towing
I usuall get 12 mpg while towing to Calif at 70+ (no overdrive)T
The best mileage comes when i use the VAC/Boost gauge to drive with. Driving style has most to do with MPG. Hope this helps

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
