Actually, taking off the skid plate is the way the manual says to do it. It's all personal preference and what works for you. I wanted to eliminate the possibility of cross threading those bolts, too. Hey, TX-Hunter, I see that you have a 50 series Flowmaster on (with duals?). That's the series number I'm thinking of putting on mine, with duals out the back and 3 1/2" stainless tips. Do you like it?

I take my skid plate off - VERY easy to do, and a lot cleaner

Hey, TundraBear. Sorry it took me so long to get back, but I'm a greenhorn as to how to post photos on the web. I'll send you them as an attachment in an e-mail, though. Thanks. Randy

TundraBear, I'll try to get a few pics of this in as soon as I can. I don't think it will affect it too much structurally. I cut about a 6"x 6" triangle shaped hole, about an inch up from the rolled edge on the bottom, and about an inch down from the top flange. I also stayed in about an inch from the back flat edge. I think somebody said they did this, in an old forum B/C.

looks likethe replacement skid plate doesnt have the protective wings on it like the oem one does. it basically looks like a sheet of metal with a bend in it. not much vertical protection from mud from the sides...true or no?

frogeye,

i was wondering if cutting a hole in the factory skidplate affects its strength. i realize that you don't off-road, but that was the second thing that poped into my head. the first is to request a picture of your mod. it sounds pretty cool and i can imagine others would also like to see it.

Since I don't do any off roading, but do like an easier way to change the oil, I did my own mod on the original skid plate. I cut a hole in the left front side, in line with the filter, big enough to get my hand in to get the filter off. I then fashioned a funnel to direct the filter drippings out this hole, and also made a cover that snaps over the hole. It works, looks good, and you have to look close to see anything is different. I now simply turn the wheels full lock left, and can access this area closer, and with no mess.

Not me. I'm one of them folks who bought and installed one of them thar newfangled Skidplates. See this here item done been designed by people who done their thinking by experience. You get access to that rascally little filter right by nudgin your arm right up to it. Got it a hole in the metal to allow fer right good access to the plug. Darn thing's so well built ya think it would stop a warthog running after ya. It was built to stay on the truck and let you get you fingers dirty maintaining the truck.

Pull it on up on your computer at www.skidplates.com.
