In addition to the list nhparrot provided, my dealer also repacks the front wheel bearings. Cost is around $475. I haven't had this service performed b/c I'm only at 19K miles. Probably will do some of it on my own.

Well, I sure have learned a couple of things . . . 1st, Santa Fe, as usual, is way overpriced all the way around, including basic maintenance at the dealership.

2nd, I thought that probably 55-60% of the TS memebers might perform their own Tundra maintenance. After looking at the Poll on "Do It yourself Tundra Maintenance" (currently on thread-index page 4 as of the date of this post); I see that out of 37 votes to date, 81% do their own maintenance! A heck of alot higher than I anticipated. I guess its time for me to get with the program if I'm going to save some $$ or at least reallocate $$ to more Tundra mods.

I also do everything on my vehicles, except the "cooling system". No matter how hard I am educated on it, I still get scared to do it, in fear of getting air trapped somewhere in the lines and then overheat!

Pretty much the dealer only does the timing sets (since I don't have the gizmo) and the really hard stuff, like brakes!

dboy4ever,
The 4wd has 7 grease fittings on the propeller shafts, 2 on the front and 5 on the rear. I do not think there are lube points on a 2wd.

Are these items specific to the 4WD model? 'Cuz I looked up both the maintenance guide and the shop manual, and neither stated "lubricate propeller shaft" for 2WD. Does that mean the 2WD drive shaft never needs lubrication?? Hope someone with knowledge could clarify this. Thanks.

d@mn, i'm at 45k, i should get around to doing this stuff. glenn, any advice or how-tos on torquing and lubing the prop and driveshaft bolts is appreciated, i'm sure i can do this myself. also, how can i change the front diff oil and the transfer case oil? i haven't ever looked at either of these, i replaced the rear diff oil with synthetic, i have a 90 gallon drum of mobil 1 gear oil so i might was well go to town on the front and the t-case. do these take the same oil as the rear diff? much thanks in advance!

The next time give me some notice I'll send you the monthly add from one of the local dealers with their price's , might get you a better discount.
One of the benifits of living here in Toyota country is I can take my car in the AM without an appointment and get it back by 5 pm .

Tried to get the oil changed in Ohio and New Jersey at the dealer while I was passing thru
they both thought I was nuts their appointments were out 3-4 days . Had to settle for Jiffy Lube and watched them like a hawk.

I hear you Spanky, and I think you're echoing the thoughts of nhParrot -- It seems like I'm so busy at times; long hours at work, that I can't find the time or the energy. On the other hand, if its fairly simple to do, I should probably look into doing it myself. I bet over 50% of the TS members perform basic Tundra maintenance themeselves.

Changing plugs, tranny fluid & filter is a piece of cake on Tundra. Just put in the Bosch Platinum 4+ runs great with these plugs.
Save some money, go alacarte if you can.

I had the 30K service done today, so your advice was just in time. Got the service for $340 with a little haggling . . .Still was high but it sure beats $425. They couldn't believe the SoCal speical, but I wouldn't relent. Finally, I gave them the old, "I come here all the time, I hope that loyalty is worth something," and it was.

Another BTW, had the brake drums machined. This is my 3rd time dealing with the brakes (Truck pulses when braking and moving down hill), first time machined; second time replaced drums; and now machined again . . . Something tells me the problem is not solved yet.

Again, thanks for your input -- It sure helped.
