I found a partial thread that I had saved regarding the fluids.

Please feel free to add to this thread.

ATF - Dexron III - you pick the brand. I use Mobil -1, but you can buy a whole case of Chevron Dexron III at Costco for around $11.00. The manual has a mistake on the quantity. It says 2.1 qts, but when you drain it, about 3.5 - 3.75 qts will come out. Whatever you do, don't overfill it.

Since I have a 4 X 2, I can't advise on the diff fluids.

Thanks for the help.

1. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. It takes about 4 quarts for a typical drain and refill. The auto trans holds about 14 quarts, but most of it is in the torque converter and will not drain out by gravity. I did the 4 qt drain and refill over several motor oil changes to get a high percentage of synthetic ATF in there.

2. Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W90 gear oil. It takes about 6 quarts to do front and rear diffs and transfer case on the 4x4 (exact quantities are in your owners manual and are pretty accurate, unlike the quantity for the transmission ATF which is too low at 2 qts.)

Thanks, Mitch

You are thinking of the rear differential which has the drain plug cocked a little to one side. Lifting up one side of the axle will help to drain more old grease out. I don't think there is a jack tall enough to get any more ATF out of the transmission torque converter.

If you really want to get more ATF out, check out the suggestions on this site: http://www.gadgetonline.com/TransFlush.htm

I just changed all the fluids in my Tundra this past weekend. I went with Mobile 1 synthetics. It took right at 6 quarts of gear oil to change the front diff, transfer case and rear diff. I bought 7 quarts and ended up opening the 7th because my gear oil pump couldn't get all of the oil out of the 6th bottle. I ended up with a full quart left over by the time I drained all the others into the last one.

I ended up using a little over 13 quarts of ATF on the transmission as I wanted to change all the fluid, not just what was in the pan. My method wasted about a quart. I pulled the top hose off of the transmission cooler and installed a longer hose with the other end into a bucket. I tie wrapped a funnel to the hood latch and connected the funnel to the end of the original hose I had pulled off of the transmission cooler. I filled the funnel with ATF, started the engine and watched the old fluid pump into the bucket while I kept adding additional fluid to the funnel. This method wasn't sucking the fluid out of the funnel as fast as it was filling the bucket so I ended up using a second funnel at the dip stick. Once I saw new fluid pour into the bucket I shut off the engine, put everything back together, and added enough fluid to make sure I had put 12 quarts in the transmission. I then drove the truck to get everything up to normal operating temperature, checked the ATF, and topped it off. If you use this method I would recommend you open at least 12 bottles of ATF ahead of time and position them for ready access.

I also pumped the power steering reservoir dry and re-filled it a couple of times over the course of the weekend. That took about 1/2 of a quart.

Good Luck,

DC

I ordered 8 Qts of Mobil1 75w 90 gear oil & 8 Qts of Mobil 1 ATF a couple of weeks ago direct from the Mobil 1 website / E-store. I received it on Tuesday. My total bill was $ 99.00 including shipping. I forgot the exacts, but I think the gear oil was $11.98 for a 2 pack ($5.99 ea.) & the ATF was +/- $9.99 for a 2 pack. It seemed like good prices from what I was reading on here & plus I had a problem locating here in WV. Anyways, I highly recommend buying from them direct. The shipment was packed very well & I got in in about a week or so. Hope I have helped.....Later
