Post First oil change and messy.

Did the first oil change yesterday, have just under 1000 miles on the truck. Any tips on how to change the filter without having oil drain all over the skidplate? I really don't want to take the skidplate off every time. Also how many grease fitting on the driveshaft? I didn't grease anything yet but I found four fittings.

Thanks....Dennis

I have found the best thing is to take off the skid plate. It only has 5 bolts holding it on and you get to see the bottom of the engine to make sure nothing is leaking.

The drive shaft has 8 grease points, 2 on the front shaft, one at each end of the main shaft as well as one at the rear spline and 3 in the center Cardin joint.

once you break the oil filter lose and its not yet dripping, put plastic bag under it to catch the drippings. or maybe a cut off milk gallon or 2 liter bottle.

I change my filter without removing the skidplate by using a plastic half gallon ice cream container. I loosen the filter enough to where the oil will drain with the container positioned between the gasketed area and the end of the filter. When it's finished I remove the filter and place it in the container. The plastic container is pliable enough that it can be flexed to fit through the underhood opening above the filter location. I'm certain there are other plastic containers of comparable size that would work.

GIVE IN TO THE PLATE
GIVE IN TO THE PLATE
GIVE IN TO THE PLATE
GIVE IN TO THE PLATE

Say this over and over again while you stare aimlessly into the sky !

I tried EVERYTHING to keep from making a mess. The only sure-fire method for me is to remove the darn thing. No more mess, easy access, good time to do inspection, and only takes minutes once you do it a few times.

Hey, go ahead and try the "other methods"....maybe one will work for you.

Good Luck !

LMAO . I agree totally. I've been taking off the skidplate from my first oil change and no mess. Real easy too. You may spend 10 minutes taking it off the first time but after that, 3-4 minutes tops.

I located a vacant space in the wheel well area adjacent to the oil filter and, using a 4.5 inch hole saw, made an access hole large enough for me to get my hand in and loosen/tighten/catch drips, etc. (I recommend using an old hole saw that you don't mind destroying because they generally aren't made for cutting metal and they're expensive. And, of course, after you cut the hole, you'll need to file the opening and remove any remaining sharp edges.) This allows me easy access to the oil filter and I'm able to clean up drips before they run down the skid plate onto the garage floor.

from the throwing-money-at-the-problem department, the skid row skid plate has a drain hole and allows side access to the filter.

that thing with the soda bottle is essential!

Are you saying that there is another skid plate available that is called the skidrow skidplate? If so where might I purchase one?

Thanks...Dennis

4wd?...eight fittings. You'll need a needle adapter for the grease gun coupler to do the front driveshaft fittings, unless the design has been changed on the '03.

Just remove the skid plate...it's not a big deal.

Default Oil Filter change

I agree, removing the skid plate is not required, the small amount of oil can be wiped off and will stop any rust from forming on it.

yeah, they're about 150 bucks...www.skidplates.com . however, as long as you remember to lube the bolts for the stock plate, you shouldn't have a problem...the dealership changes i've had, they just let the stock plate hang from the front clips or whatever's on there (i don't remember, it's been quite a while since i had the stock plate). using the soda bottle trick means a lot less mess, and you can hole-saw a drain hole in the stock plate as well. much cheaper than 150 bucks.
