Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Jerky shifting", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
2000 Tundra V8 Access Cab 4x4 bought used in March '03. Occasionally get a jerky shift from 1st to 2nd where the truck seems to hesitate slightly and then just jumps into the next gear. Doesn't happen all the time but starting to wonder if it's dependant on how fast you try to accelerate. Have tried different driving styles and no solution. Doesn't matter if the AC is on or off or if I'm towing or not. Any ideas?
Well I just want to echo the remarks of Ken and let him know that he's not alone. I have an 03 Tundra TRD and it's done the same thing since the day I bought it. It truly is just out of the blue. I guess I'll just wait and see if it happens frequently enough to worry with it.
I'll reply to several of you at once if you don't mind. It's my third Toyota truck ('92 pickup, '95 T100, '02 Tundra) and its the first time that I've been noticing anything with the transmission that would give me cause to be concerned. It appears completely random when I'm driving as well. I do like the idea of synthetic fluid in the tranny, because I really like it in the engine. I'll look into getting it flushed and using synthetic. I'll give the battery disconnect a go also. Thanks for the responses.
Mine used to do the occasional erratic shifting. I got a tranny flush and filled it new synthetic Mobil 1 ATF. Much better now. I haven't had it happen since I did this. The truck shifts much smoother overall too. I'm very glad I did this.

Echo what WD says... Mobil-1 ATF (complete purge, not just a pan drain / refill) and my truck shifts like it oughta. I wish I had done it several years ago. The folks with the 2003's are in a different pickle, as they seem to be rough as well and they already have synthetic fluid. The Mobil-1 cannot be used in the later models. - Lee

Are you telling me my 03 already has synthetic oil in the tranny?

I just got a 2004 Tundra V-8 a month ago, I found that doing crawling speeds at bumper to bumper trafic, the first to second gear shift almost slams, and sometimes 2nd gear lunges forward after shifting into third. The dealer saids this is common with Tundra's and untill Toyota comes out with a fix or recall there is nothing to correct the problem. Mine already has the synthetic fluid. It came with it. You do not change or flush for 100,000 miles.

It is rumored to be synthetic oil, but the fact is, its Toyota type T and that is the ONLY fluid they will warrantee in an 03. So we have no other choice at this point.

Hmmm, just joined the Forum, lots of usefull info... I have a 2001 V8 automatic with around 38K on it. I notice the jerky shifting occasionally when I take a 90 degree turn going around 25mph. Have never flushed the tranny..sounds like I should do it... Thanks
