Im confused... And discouraged...
I just got my truck back from Toyota after being in the shop 5 days.
They heard the knocking noise and located it exactly where i said it was comming from.
It sounds just like someone knocking lightly on a wood desk with the soft part of your fist. and comes from around the timing belt connects to the cams on the passenger side.
The truck starts knocking about 5 minutes after cold start up and lasts about 5 min. then goes away completely. Or if i start driving it goes away even sooner.
They actualy took apart the motor in that area, They called Toyota Tech Line and was told to proceed in investigating , they removed the valve covers and repacked the cams. THey checked for any wear or polished spots and looked for anything that would show contact . , but when nothing could be found out of the ordinary and no marks or any wear of any kind, and that all components were well within in spec they were told to put the motor back together again.
I was told that there is nothing to worry about and that all the components were in perfect condition. I was told that if i insisted that they would even break down the whole motor and even have a machine shop look into it, but that they still wouldnt be able to stop it or find it.
The last thing i want is to have that done , i know i would have many more problems after that senerio.
I was told i could call the Toyota 1-800 # and that would start the ball moving...
Any one have the number by chance???
Is this what everyone else is having??
Other wise the truck is perfect...\
Any sugestions....
Maybe I should just try and forget about it ,its not realy a problem unless its causing damage to the truck in some way...
What would you all do??
Thanx
ANy suggestions would be appreciated.

FRed,
I just got back, dropped it off for the tech to listen to first thing in the morning.
Sounds like we have the same issue.
Ill let you know what they say tomarow.
They put me in a beautiful new Tundra Limited.
1100 miles on it.
First thing I did when I got back here was open the hood and listen. I took my "listening stick" out and the sounds from the timing belt covers are identicle to my truck , so that must be normal. Ill listen for the Cold Start Knock in the morning.
All I know is my truck didnt do it before they switched out the Tensioner and Belt.

This is what mine sounds like too. Not immediately after startup (takes at least 5-10 seconds), and sometimes it is more noticeable than other times. I've noticed it when the engine is cold and when warmed...
I'll try the listening rod on the timing covers and let you know what I find.

If i put the trusty pc of broom stick on the two black timing belt covers protruding off the front of the motor, i can pick up two very different sounds from the right and the left sides.
Tyhe driver side black cover is a lot louder and knocks the other side is smooth sounding.
This all started after the new belt and tensioner.
Being my second Tundra, im quite used to the "normal" sounds this engine makes, the lite diesel sound and the sowing machine sounds from the injectors.
I timed it this Morning. It starts or is noticable about 10 seconds after start up and gets louder then after 3-5 minutes i drive it and it isnt noticable when i am done driving.
but the sound is more like if you were knocking on your desk with your knuckles. Kind of.
I would be interested in knowing what kind of sound differance all of you hear from the two black timing belt covers. I call them the Dolly Parton parts of the motors for obvious reasons.
I put the listening stick on the bolts and the silver metal next two them and also right on the covers. Any differance between right and left.?
Im taking it in tomarow anyway and telling them to keep it over night.
Ill let you know what they say.

Suprteck,
I started a thread under the "I-Force V8" in the Technical Section, it's labeled "Diesel Knock Tracking". There's a few of us with it and we know it won't go away. You can try there but I mostly started it to keep tabs on everyone's progress with the problem and bring to light any action by Toyota, if any.

They (TOYOTA) just replaced my belt and tensioner.
Now a new proble arises.
The truck knocks after start up but goes away after driving for awile. Not like bad fuel or pinging.
I searched the threads but couldnt find any real info on this even though I know befoire the crash the thread was dicussed to death.
Wish i would of paid attention then.
Any comments on this would be appreciated.
I start the truck cold and dont hear it but about 2-4 minutes into it it comes on. comes from the front of the engine. Not at the valve covers.
Almost sounds like from the timing belts or front area.
IMPORTANT:
Its not like a "bad fuel" knocking sound, more like a distinct knocking in its true definition sound. If that makes any sense...
Thanx for discussing this again...... if you respond
