Default Grinding exhaust noise?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had a grinding noise from the catylic converter or exhaust system when accelerating hard?

I had a hard time trying to emulate this to the dealer because the noise is only apparent 50% of the time when accelerating hard and it doesnt seem to affect the transmission. At first I though it might be a transmission problem, but the mechanic at a Tustin Toyota dealer told me that the grinding noise is due to the heat from the catalytic converter. He told me that a transmission grinding noise or transmission problem would be very apparent. He told me that the noise is a normal exhaust noise. As a result, no fixes were done.

Can anyone confirm this? Thanks for your help in advance.

dewagner825:
I think you are correct, it has had that rattle since new, a friend revved it up and we were both surprised to hear the thing rattle, my friend likes chevys and we joked about the quality of a Toyota "just listen to it". I have taken it to the dealer and they tested a few other Tundras with the V8, they all seem to rattle, I will have to check on the 03-04 to see if they rattle if not maybe Ill get the Cat replaced with a newer type

You can test this theory very easily. While the exhaust is cool, hit the cat with the side of your fist. If the cat baffle is bad/loose, you'll hear it rattle.
