I also did an early oil change. I replaced the oil and filter and put in a super magnet drainplug at 1000 miles.

I hate to go against the owner's manual but my thought was that the newer engines had better tolerances and did not need the long break-in periods or the lower rpm's like the older models. I'm still undecided as to whether or not it will harm the engine long term. Any mechanics out there with valuable information?

I bought my truck in Los Angeles and live in Tucson. I drove no higher than 60 mph the whole way home. Usually the trip takes 6 hours but it took me 10 hours to get home. It sucked but at least I know I did no harm to the truck. It sucks going 60 when the speed limit is 75 but I love my truck and I don't want to hurt it.

I worried about this also. I bought the truck in Winston-Salem NC and had 500 miles to get it home. It did get a lot of RPM variance on the West Virginia turnpike though. I'll do my oil soon too.

Thanks Gary. I think I will take your advice and change the oil on my return. I should have about 850-1000 miles on it by then. I just hope the 80 mph will not harm anything long term.

I had the same delima. Only had 200 miles on it and had to make a trip, 400 miles, highway speeds sometimes 80 (and that was just going with the flow). I wouldn't worry about it. I did drop the oil at 1000 though.

Thanks for the reply userw5. I don't know if I can keep it to 60-65 though! Once I get on the highway, I usually maintain about 70-75 because I am anxious to get to my destination. The speed limit is 70 for most of the trip and I hate to go below the limit.

It shouldn't harm it at all. Just remember to vary your speed and rpm. I would keep it around 60-65mph. I do not think it will hurt it if you have to go a little faster to pass someone. You just do not want to maintain high speeds for an extended period. If there is anyway to vary your route you may want to take some back roads, or maybe a scenic route.
