i just installed a k&n system and found that two of the air hose conections were not drilled out all the way and their were a number of plastic burrs on the intake tube .poor quality for $230.

Funny thing !
The K&N kit for the Tacoma (3.4l could go in Tundra too) has been dyno'd and proven to not increase power... in fact it some areas it was shown to decrease power. This was one by that Gadget guy.. others have found similiar results.. cutting a hole in the front of the airbox gave it more power- I have done this and got a "noticeable" difference ! pretty crazy. I guess K&N did something wrong.. he also tested air filters and found the AMSOIL filter yielded slightly higher HP and filtered better. I kit for the 4.7 may be different from the 3.4... but I would steer clear of the V6 kit !

I've had my KN kit on my truck for over 10,000 miles. I luv it and the extra horsepower it came in on. With the combo of dual exhaust, it's a kickin' throaty sound. Have any of you guys tried installing a "Helix Power Tower" on top of your throttle body?????

One other note:
The actual tube has 4 holes for the vacuum hoses. I noticed 2 of them were not drilled (still closed). I drilled the holes out with a drill. That may have been a problem with others K&N kits released. I had no problems with the engine light or idle.

Hi,
I just installed the K&N Intake kit and the TRD Duals last night. So far I've noticed Better power in mid and higher RPM. The noise is loud mostly when I give it gas. It's a different feeling and sound but so far im happy with it. At first it made my stomach turn and pulse rate go up but after a while I got use to it.

even if that was true, you would gain some small amount of horsepower due to the fact that the engine has to work less to suck air into the chambers. The idea with a less restrictve air filter is to make it easier on the engine, remeber that more air into the engine equals more horsepower, that's why headers are said to "suck" more air into the combustion chamber. Now also remember that if it was also true that the computer didn't change the fuel/air ratio, then think of what would happen if you took your truck to high altitude, it would run rich and kill your engine... The greatest advantage of EFI is that the computer does take advantage of more air...

A mechanic at my dealer told me that if I add any type of intake that the stock computer will just tell the engine to do the same thing and you will gain no power just noise. There arent really any good performance chips out yet either.

I had a K&N on my previous two cars, both Mustang GT's and both cars went well over 100k miles on one K&N filter. I never had any problems with the filter letting too much dirt through. I have heard of problems with the K&N filters on the Tundra though and this is why I don't have one on mine.
I also bought a K&N for my wife's BMW but took it off because we were experiencing a cold start problem occassionally and we had an O2 sensor go out also (I don't know if it had anything to do with the K&N though). I just feel a little safer with the OEM paper filter in an expensive car like that.

The other important factor to consider is the filtration capabilities. Along with the dyno before and after to asses the power curve, a before an after oil analysis should be performed to analyze the filtration effects.

Did you dyno your truck before and after the install of the filter? Or is this a seat of the pants "feeling" of increased power? I would love to see a dyno sheet on this intake before buying one.

i believe it was a pre-charger wrap that went over the filter to add more filtration. it is a k&n product

Before you do it, do some searching and get educated on how much dirt a K&N filter lets in. The ONLY K&N product I have ever encountered that actually filtered dirt out of the air it passed was owned by a guy on this forum -- I think it was one of these kits but it included an additional, optional piece...

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 U.S.C. 2302(C))
This federal law regulates warranties for the protection of consumers. The essence of this law concerning aftermarket auto parts is that a vehicle manufacturer may not condition a written or implied warranty on the consumers using parts or services which are identified by brand, trade, or corporate name (such as the vehicle makers brand) unless the parts or service are provided free of charge. The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty. Further, consumers are advised to be aware of any specific terms or conditions stated in the warranty which may result in its being voided. The law states in relevant part:
“No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumers using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name....” (15 U.S.C. 2302(C)).

K&N guarantees their kit not to void the warranty, and they've never said a word about it at Toy of Puyallup the times I've had it in for scheduled service. Iceman and Rod Millen both make kits, and my guess would be these won't cause problems...after all the warranty doesn't say you can't use non-Toyota parts, just that parts must be of the same quality as the "Genuine Toyota" part.

Does installing one of the aftermarket kits effect the warranty? I would like to do the swap but have held back untill I find out for sure.
Thanks,
Bob

I’ve had mine installed for around 5k miles now, no problems. It undoubtedly had a positive effect on mid-to-high rpm power. More to the point, it moved power up the rpm range a little. The sound is the biggest improvement, whereas before the intake note was rather muted, now it sounds very throaty at idle and until around 3000 revs, then it just wails. It did cut a little from off-idle power, as any intake will, but the sound alone is worth it.
As far as gas mileage, it’s showed maybe a mile per gallon increase. Hard to say, as I’m not very consistent in my driving habits. Not to mention the speed with which I drive.
To me, overall, it was well worth the money. As Breathing Borla’s unfortunate experience shows, actual mileage may vary.

I put a gen II kit on a couple of weeks ago and it has very good so far. It has a very noticable sound difference over the stock airbox. It sounds like a 4 barrel when the RPMs go above 3 grand. As far performance gains, it has more mid range power and a little more throttle response.

There was a ton of info and debate before the crash but I will repeat some of my findings.
I had the kit the first week it was out after being on the waiting list for 6 months. Installed it with my father when I went to vist him in kentucky. My truck would barely run at all, and the check engine light would not go off. Called K&N tech line and talked to a Linda Problst. She said the kit was so new that she did not have a diagram to help me, just to keep driving and it will get better or call her back. Easy for her to say, it's not her 30k tundra risking damage and running worst than a ford on 3 cyliinders (Strike 1).
She also said to make sure I disconnected the battery which I did because it is the first step in the directions. I tried to get it to run for three days, and countless times my father and I checked to make sure that it was installed right, no go (strike 2). Engine light would come on after every time i reset the computer.
I then got pissed off and ask for them to prove with dyno reults that it worked and gained power. Yea right!! They siad they did not have the result s as another company dynos the kits for them, so I asked them for the number to that company. I got a company that said they only dyno motorcycles and they did not know anythings about the GEN II kit or have dyno results for any thing. So I got the run around for about three more days trying to track down dyno proof. Everytime somebody had an excuse for not having the dyno results.(strike 3, your out).
My father who has worked in aircraft maintence for united airlines in the past and who is one of the national parts distribution managers for toyota helped me put it in so I know it was not a install problem. He offered to take it to work and have the toyota tech instructors that teach the dealer toyota techs to look at it, I said great. The morning he was going to take it in he started it up and check engine light came on and it would barley go up the hill by his house so he came back home and said he did not want to risk engine damage with the 45 minute drive to work. I then immedaitly took the kit off and sent it back on the nose of a rocket to K&N and got my money back, put on the stock intake and it ran like a champ.
To this day nobady has been able to produce a tundra specific dyno chart for any intake kit that shows power gains and no loses. There is a guy on this site under the name iforcev8 who worked with a comapny (and has good intake knowledge) on a iceman intake and lost 20lbs of torque on the dyno.
Conclusion= stock intake is best with maybe a small mod to the stock intake. My father said it best when he siad "some little japanese guy probably spent five years of his life tuning that stock intake system, so it does not suprise me that the K&N did not work".
sorry for the long post but all of this got lost after the crash.
