Comparing Tundra (A340) with its main competitor F-150 (4R70W), A340 actually has firmer (faster) shift.
On GM/Ford/Chrysler transmissions, firmer shift is usually achieved by modifying the valve body.

Since the transmission is computer controlled, can it be programmed to have firmer shifts? Or did Toyota intentionally design the transmission to shift softer due to the small rear end?

Just replaced 12 qt. out of 16 qt. with 50% Mobil synthetic ATF in the E4OD. I warmed up 3 seconds and bring it to 70 MPH in 2 minutes. The ambient temperature is about 60F. To my suprise, it is shifting almost like if the engine is fully warmed up. It shifts later and less noticable especially 3-4. I drove it from Houston to San Antonio (200 miles). During the trip I varied the throttle position to see how the tranny respond. Unlike before, tranny seems to be more sensitive which a downshift does not require as much flooring on the gas pedal. I am not as familar with A340 as E4OD or 4R70W. I will definitely try some synthetic (at least 1/3 of overhaul capacity).

Remember, this tranny is computer controlled, it's all in the programing....

The reason I question shift point with respect to temperature is my experience with Ford 4R70W and E4OD. I use Aamco (Exxon) Mercon V semi-synthetic in 4R70W which shift schedule is very consistent. THe E4OD gets Aamco Mercon/Dexron (dino) will shift earlier when cold. I might try some Synthetic in E4OD next oil change.

I'm happy with the way my Tundra shifts both cold and warm. It seems to shift earlier when cold (1-2 and 2-3 @ 1200-1800 rpm) in the lower gears and holds OD until warmed sufficently. Our other vehicle is a 1999 4Runner and it's tranny holds OD until warm but the lower gears revs 2-3 higher than I like even with synthetic oil.
The shifting when warm is "firm". There's been discussion previously before the sever crashed. My tranny shifts simular to a chevy TH350 I installed a "shift improver" when hauling a trailer. My opinion; nice feature to have in the Tundra. Less slippage in tranny, less wear and tear on internal components, longer life span, less repairs. Something I haven't experienced in the last five GM products!!!!!

From what I've seen, it keeps the rpms consistent, and tries to avoid over-reving when cold.

I noticed my transmission tends to shift earlier when cold. Under partial throttle in normal driving it will upshift at 2100 RPM but 1900 RPM when cold. The shifts especially 1-2 and 2-3 are also firmer.
All other club members I talked to during last meet have different experience. Shifts tend to delay when engine is cold which makes sense. Revving up the engine helps heat up catalyst which reduces emission.
Could 2002 models have different programming?
