That sounds like exactly what mine does. But mine started doing it at about 15,000 miles and is slowly getting worse (now at 22,000 miles). It is only in the last couple of months that I could really start to predict what the conditions it happens under are though. As soon as I get a chance I am taking it to the dealer to be check out. Other than that and the all to common brake vibration that they fixed, I have really enjoyed the truck.

Mr. Guest

Mine is a 2002 it does that same thing yours does, did it today. I thought at one time today I was going to have to call the dealer and tell them to pickup the truck and fix the darn problem. It mostly happens to me when its really cold, when I put it in Reverse, or try to start it after it's been warm or setting for awhile. It's driving me crazy.

You're not the only one with that problem. Mine has done it also. Sad thing is my truck is an '02 and only has 3,500 miles. I've had several problems with so overall I'm kind of of disappointed with the overall quality.

hard starting after vehicle has set for a time in hot weather is more than likely due to hot soak causing the fuel in the rails to turn to vapor the old vapor lock. this can be caused by several conditions low fuel pressure bad fuel pressure regulator leaking off pressure bad fuel pump check valve leaking or even a leaking injector. My sujestion is to have the fuel pressure checked by a qualified service profesional and this should tell the story. Also something to take note of is if you a buying fuel that has alcohol added or using a fuel dryer this can cause the vapor point of the fuel to lower causing the same symtoms

Thanks for the info. It is under warranty so I think I will let the dealer fix it.

I had a very similar problem with my Jeep GCL. It was the fuel pump ( I believe it's
located in the gas tank on that vehicle) and would have cost something like $400-500
(can't remember) had it not been covered under warranty. If your's is still under warranty, let them deal with it!

This is just a thought, but it may work. When the engine is at idle, the fuel injector is at its nearest closed opening. If the injectors are at all dirty, this could cause the engine to starve for fuel and die. If it were me, I'd run a can of total fuel system cleaner thru it like Berrymans or Chevron Techron. Can't hurt. Let us know what happens if you try it.

Sounds like it could be dirty gas / clogged fuel filter ????

My 2000 Tundra with the 4.7 occasionally stalls and dies when it is put into gear. It happens when is was driven, parked for a couple hours and then started up again. It also occasionally is hard to start after it was warm and then started after a hour or so. Anyone else have this type of problem? It is probably minor, but I wanted to have some ideas of possible problems before I take it to the dealer.

Default Re: Engine dies when truck is put into gear

Had the same problem on my 2001 Tundra SR5 V8 80,000 miles. Changed the fuel filter (FRAM $16.00) and ran 20oz. Chevron/Techron Fuel injector cleaner ($7.00) through and it quit stalling. I cut the old filter open and it was pretty dirty. It has some kind of cardboard fiber crap rolled up in it. I was expecting something a little more high tech. I think when the fuel filter gets dirty it takes more work from the fuel pump to pressurize the system. So much extra load is added when the truck is put in gear that the pump can't force enough fuel through the filter and the engine dies. That's my theory...
