Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust Manifold leak or Lifter Taping?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm trying to diagnose a problem I'm having with my 2002 V-8 Tundra. As of recent, when starting the truck cold, I notice what seems to be a tapping noise coming from the right side(passenger side) of the engine. It's relativley pronounced from inside the vehicle and continues on until the engine is completley warmed up. However, even after it's warmed up I can still hear it, it's just not as pronounced. What's got me stumped is that if I open the hood (engine running) and get close to the engine I can't hear anything, but if I get inside the truck and close the door I can hear the tapping sound. I've read plenty on this forum about Exhaust Manifold problems but haven't seen anything on lifter problems. What do you guy's think? Is this the beggining stages of a manifold leak or could it be a lifter issue? It seems to me that I should be able to hear a manifold leaking when the hood is popped and engine running.
I just purchased this vehicle recently with 26,000 miles on it and am a little aperhensive of the dealer tearing my engine down to replace a lifter. I'm afraid the engine will never be the same as far as reliability.
Also, something else I've noticed, not related to the above issue is that sometimes while sitting at a stop light holding the brake, the engine speed will suddenly jump 500-800 rpm and if my foot isn't firmly on the brake the truck will lunge forward a foot or two. I almost took out the back wall in my garage because of this. Is this normal or possibly a throttle body problem?
sounds like mine, 'cept mine's on the left side. i cannot distinguish the sound from the top of the engine compartment either, too many other noises...but it's noticeable from the wheel well. i'd put my money on the exhaust manifold...look at "Imdone"s photos to see what the stockers look like...but you're of course free to tear apart the cams, lifters, injectors, heads, headlights, and anything else ...boulder toyota could not diagnose the problem until it was sufficiently cold that the crack was fairly open, so wait 'til it's colder out before you take it to the dealer. if it is an exhaust leak, they'll be unable to ignore it when the engine's fairly cold.
regarding the second thing, several people have noticed similar symptoms...hopefully one of them will jump in. i think it had something to do with the a/c, but i don't remember.

Hey DS- What, if anything, have you done for your alleged exhaust manifold leak? I have a 2000 Tundra, 42K, with the exhaust leak.. Ticking fades quieter as engine warms & my local dealer confirmed. I have gotten no CEL conditions or anything but ticking and my friend reminding me it sounds like hell from outside. IMHO, no news is good news. I'm thinking of getting the SS Autochrome manifolds and bringing to a local exhaust shop.

i had the manis replaced under warranty at about 35K, 40K, something like that (i have 100K w/100$ deductible). it was great for a while, then cut loose again...a year later, i need a new set. i'm currently awaiting the results of the s&s long tube header tests. other people with the problem went with other headers, i just chose to wait for the s&s for various reasons.
Good question. I have no Idea. Could someone confirm this?

The V8s in our Tundra's have lifters. This is confirmed by the Toyota repair manual. Lifters are the parts that ride against the camshaft lobes and transfer movement to the valves. DN
