It was pretty dirty on the butterfly and the body itself. I had about a 3/8" wide band of gunk and used STP cleaner from Autozone with a couple of paper towels.
The results:
-I had lately come to press the gas pedal to back down my driveway and this morning I had to ride the brake pedal (it was idling at about 1100 RPM). By the time I got to work it was idling at about 800 or 900 RPM but still lots of "go" in the parking lot.
-Last night I took it for a spin after letting it idle in the carport for about 5 minutes. When I left the subdivision I nailed it and spun the tires up to 30 mph. MERCY!
-The whistling intake sound is back too. I had forgotten about that. I just love hearing my baby sucking air.
I was so impressed with this little trick, I cleaned the TB on my wife's Camry and she couldn't believe how smoothly it was idling, sweet. It's always good to score points with the little woman. Uggh, me man, me improve woman's machine, uggh.
Thanks for all the useful info. fellow TSers! I wouldn't have done it without first reading it here.
What kind of cleaner did you guys use exactly? I'm going to try to pick some up at the store so I can do this over the Thanksgiving holliday.
I use a Valvoline TB spray cleaner, but any one that is safe for use with coated TB's should be ok. Just be careful, some of the regular "Carb and Choke" cleaners are not ok for TB's. Read the labels.

yeah mark that STP stuff works pretty well. a toothbrush is much easier than paper towels next time.
Thanks for the toothbrush tip!
I cleaned mine last night, first time in 60K miles - my idle went up to 1400. I have not watched since the drive to work but i hope its back down.
Can't wait to see the affect on fuel economy. I did this on our i30 a while back and the mpg went from 21 to 25.
Is there a "how to" in the garage section for this job??

Yes. It's a very simple procedure. Check the "Maintenance and Repair Bay" it's one of the first procedures there.

I use the Valvoline too, works great. The dirt just melts off.

Glenn,
You might need to trim the extra http out for some who wouldn't notice it.
I should add my little cleaning tip here. Instead of propping the butterfly open with a screwdriver or other tool, just grab the wheel where the throttle cable connects and turn it open by hand.
