Exclamation Burning oil!!

I have an 03' Tundra, Saturday afternoon after the truck had been sitting from the previous night, I started it and it turned over about 3 times (usual) and the fourth sounded real weak, but it started anyway, but when it did it blew a thick puff of blue smoke out of my tailpipe(s), and it continued to smoke when I accelerated for the next 3 minutes or so, getting thinner and thinner as it stopped. Also as soon as I started it my oil pressure was unusually high about 3/4 of the way to the top, thats about where it rides when I am going 70-80 mph, but I was idleing and the truck was not idleing high, the oil pressure worked it's way back down slowly over the next 5 minutes or so, back to "normal" range. I started it 3 or 4 more times that day and it was fine, so I was gonna write it off as a stuck valve and wasn't worried about it, but the next morning (Sunday)it did it again, it wasn't as severe as far as smoking (it still did though) but the oil pressure was high again. This morning (Monday) it was fine, although I wouldn't have been able to see smoke since it was dark, but the oil press. was fine. Does this sound like something I need to get looked at ASAP? or can it wait till next week?? I don't want to not have my truck throught the holidays, but I am definately gonna have my dealership look at it eventually.

My oil pressure always goes to 3/4 at cold idle,(cold idle is between 1000-1200 RPM) only after real warm does it drop to normal 1/4+ mark...I don't think that has anything to do with it. The obvious question is, how old is your oil, and what weight you running. Some mild momentary smoke at startup can be considered normal, even in newer engines, in fact I believe 1/2 quart every 3k is considered normal in many vehicles.

Also....you should leave the pedal alone at startup...and lay off for at least 1 min....reving engine at startup is the fastest way to engine damage known...it takes a good 20 secs. to get oil completely circulating.

I dont get any smoke...not even a puff, I recomend changing oil, and running synthetic if your not already....other then that usually valve seals could be allowing a bit to drop into cylinder after cooling off.

I think these truck have to be the richest running trucks on the road. I started up my truck this morning and watched it run while standing in my garage. My truck's exhaust was bright, thick& white and smelled like a snowblower, really rich in gasoline. It ran this way for 1-2 minutes, then switched over to the usual transparent/white exhaust and the gasoline smell went away. My truck only has 14K miles, but maybe I need to change over to a platinum plug?

Mine hasn't done it again since the last time I posted about it, and I think your right about running rich, I don't know if its becasue I pay more attention to the muffler now, but the truck always has some sort of exhaust "smoke" for the first 1-2 minutes after startup, must be normal. As far as the plugs go, I think the iridiums that are already in our truck are prefered over platimums.

I was not aware that iridium plugs came stock in our trucks. I always assumed that they came stock with regular tipped plugs. Did you ever pull any of your plugs to confirm this? It would be great if I already had the iridiums in my truck because I was just thinking of installing iridiums.

Copper plugs are standard. No one has reported any benefit from platinum or iridium plugs except longer plug life, and the coppers are good for 30,000.

I'm sorry, for some reason I was thinking that my truck came with iridiums, thats why I haven't even thought about changing them (32,000). I will try to figure out why I thought this, and I will definately be getting new ones soon.

No problem....it never hurts to throw an idea out there and get some feedback. The only reason I would swithch to and iridium or platinum would be to get more miles out of a better plug. I swapped my wife's 4runner over to platinums when I bought it just so I would'nt have to mess with it for a long time. I'll probably do the same with the Tundra soon.
