Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Header gasket crack causing....................", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
knocking noise in engine compartment when truck is cold, and after it cools down after running. After re-torqueing header bolts last week, my buddie and i really felt there was an internal problem....piston slap or possible bearing problem.I brought the truck by the dealer last friday so the serv manager could here what i was talking about. He insisted that although it did sound like a clack,clack/knock,knock he said it sounded also as if it was air passing through a diaphram of some sort(his interpretation)and also garranteed it was not an internal engine issue. So that being said i went to my buddies shop and removed the passenger side header from the engine. What do you think we found? The very last exhaust port on the gasket was cracked!I then emailed ss auto chrome were i purchased them on ebay to inquire buying replacement header gaskets or if using toyota would be better. They repied back saying the gaskets are on shortage and using a factory crush gasket would be the way to go.They use a standard paper gasket for cost cutting reasons. So my advise to all of you are , first make sure the knocking your hearing really isn't your exhaust....believe me, i really thought it was a knock....that's how real it sounds, and for all of you that want to put headers on, regardless of brand, use the stock toyota aluminum gasket, you'll eliminate any exhaust leaks from premature gasket failure.Good Luck all of you with this possible same problem. What do you think about no gaskets. On old 350 chevy motors when we would put some headers on we would just leave the gasket off and bolt it to the heads. It worked better and it never had any leaks.

i wouldn't try it. that's a lot of labor to toy with such an idea. logically, if they leak with the gaskets, they'd leak worse without the gaskets.
Thats not true.I have put headers on lots of vehicle and they always blow out the gasket.Every time,Remove the gasket and the surfaces meet better. As long as everything is nice and flat(smooth surfaces) it wont leak and there is no gasket to blow out.I have the shorty headers on my truck and I installed them with the gasket it came with but if it ever burns out I would use a small bead of high temp silicone and no gasket.Ever new car has thin metal gaskets between the heads and the manifolds.I wouldnt even call it a gasket, but thats what they have.Sorry to disagree but its just my opinion.

How long did you have your headers on before they started leaking?

I just removed the Autochrome headers the last two days to install the new S&S long tube headers. On the autochromes I retorqued everything after a two week period and when I removed the Autochromes, the exhaust nuts had loosened and there was blow by on the left front header gasket that was causing the same noise you describe. I used the gaskets that came with the headers and wouldn't use them again, period. I would also not reuse the exhaust nut since the locking device is pretty well shot aftet one use, i.e. if you can remove them with just your fingers, replace them.
